Online poker rooms often run tournaments with guaranteed prize pools. When not enough players enter to make the guarantee, the room has to make up the difference. That difference is called an overlay, and it basically amounts to money added to the prize pool of a tournament - a great value for online poker players.
We review dozens of guaranteed tournaments every week and let you know which ones have an overlays and which don't. By reviewing the past performance of a tournament, you get a very good sense for what tournaments are likely to have overlays in the future - and those are the tournaments smart players want to enter.

Lots of the main online poker sites that cater to North American consumers and several sports betting operations of high volume have been given a painful blow by payment services that followed the shutting of a check processing issue. The online poker area was particularly affected because of their high volume. Such companies aren’t able to use more solid processing firms that are based in North America because of the current legislation. Check processing firms have trouble operating high volume companies.

World Poker Tour Enterprises Inc. came to an agreement with the Fox Sports Network recently to have the seventh season of the World Poker Tour exclusively broadcasted on that station. The World Poker Tour was previously broadcasted on the Travel Channel as well as the Game Show Network. However, the discussions surrounding this season long agreement seems to indicate that there will be no further channel changes anytime soon.

The Fox Sports Network has a viewer base of over 80 million people across the world. This is quite an advantage for reaching a wide audience. The episodes are currently being filmed in several locations as the table events take place. The first couple of events were filmed recently in Las Vegas at the Bellagio Cup IV Final table. The details regarding the schedule for showing the series is no doubt being decided by the World Poker Tour and the Fox Sports Network but has not yet been released to the public. The move is hoped to attract a wider audience to televised poker as Fox is renowned for quality content and is available on many more cable networks than other channels.

Aside from this change the World Poker Tour televised series should remain the same. Fans can expect the same quality programming brought to you by the same hosts. This series has always been a favorite among poker fans despite the numerous other televised poker events that have begun to air in recent years. Fox Sports Network itself has been home to several other televised poker series as well. However, the World Poker Tour is the most rated poker series to be aired on the channel yet. It features several international poker tournaments with some of the world's most professional players. It first started airing in late 2002.

Televised poker has become increasingly popular over the years and has attracted a number of players to the game. It continues to be a great marketing tool for the game and individual tournament holders but also it provides a medium for getting to know the players. It is a form of publicity for them as well. Other televised poker games including the World Series of Poker on ESPN have also had a hand in this. Features of the World Poker Tour televised series such as being able to see the player's hole cards has made watching the game more meaningful for those who wish to watch for fun or to learn about the game.

Do you know who will compete in Spain this year?
Happysappy via the world wide web
Enbil is in Europe on his quest to win his sixth straight World Championship. He will be competing until his return to Dania on Novemeber 1st. The King of partido Jai-Alai, Enbil will once again try to continue the longest World Cup win streak in the history of the sport.
Enbil was joined by Urtaran, who has been rewarded for his incredible move up the rankings over the last year. He will return to Dania in September. Other Dania stars will be competing in the Basque country as the summer continues.
Both Arriaga and Celaya will leave in August. Arriaga, who has won just about every title in the sport besides the World Cup, will look to pull in the crown. Last year he came very close, finishing in 2nd place. Celaya will return to partidos for the first time in a long time. Dania veteran Oyarbide, the new head of the Players Union and probably the most respected star amongst the players, will go to compete in Europe in mid-August.
Dan LeBatards 1st Celebrity Poker Tournament
Dan LeBatards quest to bring Jai-Alai back has been a smashing success so far, with two very special evenings inside the fronton. On Wednesday night, July 16th, LeBatard will change focus and try his hand at a hand of cards for Dan LeBatards fist Celebrity Poker Tournament in the Dania Jai-Alai CardRoom.
The tournament will only have a $25 entry fee, and competitors will get to play against LeBatard, as well as Stugotz, Jorge Sedano and other station hosts. Other celebrities will be in play and will be announced as we get closer to the event.
Each player will receive 2,000 units and there will be ten minute blinds. The field is limited to 250 players and you can sign up at the podium in the CardRoom right now. With 250 entrants the winner is set to take home $2,000, plus a host of bonus prizes.
Special Bounty prizes will be awarded to players. Even nicer ones will be given if you eliminate one of the guest celebrities. And it is still Wednesday night at Dania, which means dollar dogs with fries, beers, sodas, frozen drinks and more. And dont forget about the 13 game of live Jai-Alai action, too.
As with any LeBatard run event, things will be quirky and there will be all kind of surprises. So make sure to head on up to the CardRoom right now to reserve your seat for Dan LeBatards 1st Celebrity Poker Tournament at Dania Jai-Alai.

It would have been an interesting story to see a reasonably attractive girl make the final nine.  Especially in light of the final table delay, in which Harrahs/ESPN are bound to create a reality show story build up of the event.  Shed be a little easier on the eyes than say.Dennis Phillips.
Interestingly enough, her ego and some poker karma seems to be at work in her eventual demise.  For those of you who dont know.  Tiffany Michelle is/was a poker journalist for Pokernews.  A great site, run by the infamous Tony G.  Well, Tony is a good guy, and put a bunch of folks in the Main Event to help them out, and publicize his site at the same time.  Tiffany was one of those people.  She was to play for 33%, on a complete freeroll, in exchange for promoting Pokernews.  Oddly, most pictures you see of her have her littered with Ultimate Bet patches.  She was rocking one Pokernews patch
To be fair, as accustom in the WSOP - the patches/deals grow proportionally to how deep you are in the event.  In addition, Tiffany isnt the first one to either add to their sponor list, or jump ship all together. This is a shady process that goes down when you make deals on napkins and throw money at broke poker players.  It makes sense from a supply and demand perspective, because there is less real estate, and more guaranteed coverage of individual players. Its worth noting she does get a little extra attention on this issue because she is a voice (online video hostess) in the poker industry, and a female in a sea of males.
However, where the ego/karma bit comes in for her is in communicating with her sponsor.  First off, it is only fair you give your main sponsor a call/text/email to inform them of your intentions.  A well connected guy like Tony G could in fact help you along on your mission to acquire sponsorship dollars (most likely from his own main site sponsor, Poker Stars).  But do you do that?   Na.  Just slap a few shady ass Ultimate Bet patches on like youre a slave to collusion, cheating, super users, and Russ d steal money from my own mother Hamiliton.
Fuck that.  If I was Tony G, Id pimp slap you across the face for being a shady, money/fame hungry, female dog.  Now, she did have a Pokernews patch on at all times, and when interviewed on Pokernews she covered up one of her UB patches on her chestbut come on.  Show respect for the people that put you in the position in the first place.  It seems we can be quick to forget where we were before we got into the limelight and started playing for $9M.
This little incident reminds me of the Poker Bowl last year - a team event, where Will was playing on the Bluff Magazine Team alongside Paul Wasicka and others.  They had team jerseys (Oakland) but Will was going to wear a PROP patch to support the brand.  The fine folks at Bluff informed him that wasnt possible as they were all going to wear Bluff patches. Will reluctantly agreed.  Paul Wasicka, well he didnt cuz hes got an exclusive deal with Full Tilt, so he was permitted to wear a different patch.  Lesson learned - big companies in the industry can do whatever they want.  Small ones - f.ck you.
Whatever, either way.  Im sure Tiffany is a nice enough person, but I have never met her so its just a guess.  It was probably poor judgement, caught up in the moment type stuff.  She was playing for $9M.  And that kind of money can make anyone do silly things.  Minor beat for Pokernews.  A win for a shady cheating bastard site, Ultimate Bet.
Final Thought: Why the hell would you promote UB unless you have to like Phil Hellmuth?.

The 2k NLHE event that I won a seat to through RaketheRake was my first ever WSOP event. I just turned 21 last year so this was my first opportunity to play in the WSOP anyway.  The event was a lot of fun, and I ran really well for the first ten levels or so, winning a huge pot with AQ, vs KK, vs 77 all in preflop to build what I think was the chip lead, which I held onto for an hour or two I think. That was midway through day 1 and for the rest of the day I kinda of slowly built up some chips until the end of the day when we were on the money bubble, and the tournament director decided to extend the play of Day 1 into extra levels in order to get into the money. I ended up pretty much terrorizing my table during the bubble, raising 4-5 pots an orbit, despite losing several big pots in preflop all in pots. I remember one hand, Full Tilt Poker pro Erica Schoenberg raised from utg, and I 3bet J6s on the button, and took it down on an AT9 flop, that was fun. Unfortunately I lost a big all in right before we got in the money which severly limited me. I ended day 1 with 38k chips which was below average. Day 2, my chips were pretty much on a roller coaster, up and down, up and down all day, with me running fairly well, until my last hand where I shoved 15bbs over a middle position raise with AJo, and got called by AThh, which then proceeded to make a flush to end my tournament. I got to say though, it was fun going to the payout section of the casino, and getting almost $7,000 in cash paid out to me directly. It is a much cooler feeling to win a lot of money like that in live poker, than it is online poker where all you see is a number on a screen.  That said, playing for nearly 15 hours on day 1 definitely made me not like live poker so much! LOL.

, 2008!  They plan to help the OSCF reach their goal of making Cerebral Palsy a thing of the past.  Fifty percent of the proceeds from the tournament go to the players and fifty percent goes to OSCF.
Some of the celebrities that will be taking part in the fundraiser are: Sam Simon, Norm MacDonald, Jennifer Tilly, Ben Affleck, Colin Quinn, Jerry Cantrell, and Montel Williams, to name a few of the many.
The One Step Closer Foundation was founded in 2007 and is a non-profit, charitable organization whose main goal is to ease, as much as possible, the lives of those who suffer from Cerebral Palsy.  The OSCF has used various fundraising efforts, such as this poker tournament, to support groups and individuals with financial aid.  The OSCF also provides money to researchers looking for medical advancements in treating and diagnosing Cerebral Palsy.
Jacob Zalewski, founder and CEO of OSCF, suffers from Cerebral Palsy.  When he was born three months premature he was given a three percent chance of survival due to several complications at birth. Jacob has never considered himself handicapped by this debilitating disease.  He actually has considered it a blessing.  He believes it is something God has entrusted to him, to use positively in inspiring others.
Jacob states, “I have always said that if I was ever in a position to do some good in this wonderful world, I would do so without hesitating.  I think we were all put here for a reason and that absolutely everything happens for a reason.”
There are others deeply involved in this foundation and they are all equally as positive and passionate about its cause as Jacob.  It is an inspiring to see individuals who want to “put the welfare of others above selfish concerns”.  This foundation looks to have a bright future and hopefully the poker tournament not only brings in proceeds, but also brings awareness to Cerebral Palsy.

Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) sponsored the bill along with Senator Ron Paul (R-Texas) in response to a hearing that pointed out the flaws in the UIGEA that are not only making it hard to implement, but could make it hard to enforce as well.
On Tuesday, the committee will get a chance to discuss and debate H.R. 5767 as well as make any amendments.
One amendment in the works is the King amendment. In a call to action to its members last week, the Poker Players Alliance explained that the King amendment will force the regulatory agencies to define unlawful Internet gambling through a formal rulemaking procedure with due process and opportunity for input from affected parties.
Tuesday could also be a chance for the Financial Services Committee to vote to approve the bill to move on to a vote in the House as well.
Given that Frank is also the chair of the committee, there is a good chance the bill could go to vote and get approved. The PPA is also throwing its weight behind the bill in hopes that this will happen.
In order to get this bill out of Committee and onto the House Floor, we need your help, the organization said in its call to action to its members.
We need you to contact the committee and express your support for H.R. 5767, as well as the King amendment which will refine the bill language. PPA strongly supports H.R. 5767 and the King amendment, but this bill and amendment wont pass without your help.
Getting passed in the committee doesnt automatically mean it will go to a House floor vote anytime soon, though. Bills often make it through the committee stage and still dont see a vote on the House floor, much less become law.
Tuesdays action is still important, however, in the process of moving the bill forward. Action on the bill, plus the increasing pressure from the European Union with regard to online gambling, could be the grease needed to get the wheels moving on reversing the online gambling ban.
According to the U.K. Financial Times, EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mendelson plans to send a delegation to Washington next month to press its case with U.S. lawmakers and hold a press conference about the online gambling issues between the two governments.
The European Union may be on the verge of bringing its own World Trade Organization complaint against the United States, because it believes the nation is discriminating against its online gambling companies.
Antigua and Barbuda had taken a case to the World Trade Organization claiming that the United States online gambling ban was a violation of trade regulations set up for WTO member countries.
Antigua won that case after three years of fighting and has been undergoing compensation talks with the United States. Since the inception of the case, however, the United States has toughened its online gambling ban with the UIGEA, and online gambling companies around the world have been forced to close their businesses to U.S. customers.
The U.S. has also chosen to pull out of its WTO agreement with regard to online gambling, which opened it up to claims from any WTO nation that has interests in the online gambling industry.
The European Union did come to a settlement agreement with the United States in that matter, but representatives did say at the time that the EU wouldnt tolerate the United States discriminating against companies headquartered in the Union.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Justice has been pursuing U.K.-listed companies, including PartyGaming, Sportingbet and 888 Holdings, operators of some of the top online poker sites as well as other betting portals, for violations of its online gambling laws.
The U.S. DOJ has gone so far as to issue subpoenas against some of the European-based banks that advise those online gambling companies.
According to the Financial Times, U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab has responded to formal European Commission questions in the matter by saying there is no basis for any allegations of discriminatory enforcement of U.S. gambling laws.
Instead, the USTR believes the ECs investigation into the matter is based on mistaken assumptions, and that the charges being brought were based on a number of factors, but nationality was not one of them.

My story about Hard Rock training its dealers made it in Local today, and I write about the specific rules in Showtime.
A couple of minor points:
1.) When they said $15 a hand, they are, of course, taking into account the market. If there's long lines of people dying to play, the min will go up. If the joint is empty, heck yes, it's going down. My thought: it'll be $25 on Sunday nights and other busy nights. But, as they themselves say, everything can change.
2.) When I said in the Showtime story that players can double on any two cards, Hard Rock management pointed out an exception: when the player gets a blackjack. I didn't write it because I thought it would only confuse people. I.E.: You get a an Ace-Jack, and the dealer has a Six up, for example. A person could try to play it as "11," and go for a double, rather than the 3-to-2 the blackjack pays. I kind of think no player in his right mind would do that, but then, I'm a poor working stiff. Has anyone every tried to make that play, or would you? Help me out here...
3.) Meanwhile, I mentioned that they'll have eight-deck shoes in lower limit areas, six-deck in higher. There also might be continuous shufflers. They weren't totally clear on that, so I didn't get into writing it. But again, back to the market thing: if the public hates them, they'll come out (remember when they went to electronic cards in the poker room?). I don't mind them because I'm not much of a card-counter, and a player I talked to said she likes them because they speed up the game. But you're playing with a virgin deck each round. What do you think?
And of course, if you're new to this blog, bookmark it. Read it during lunch hour or when you're trying to look busy at your computer. It's OK. Honest.

Other action from last night after the jump:

The pros continued their domination of the World Series of Poker last night, taking down both bracelets awarded. First, Full Tilt Pro Kenny Tran beat Alec Torelli 2-0 to take down the $10,000 Heads-Up World Championship, taking down almost $540,000 and an invite into the 2009 NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship. In the $1,500 Razz event, Team Poker Stars Pro Barry Greenstein won his 3rd career bracelet, eliminating Chris Klodnicki in an almost 3 hour headsup match. All three of Barrys bracelets have been won in non-holdem events (PLO and NL KC Lowball being the other two).
The $1,500 NL donkament couldnt get to a final table, so they return this afternoon with 17 remaining.

Game type: 200/400 NL Cash, Full Tilt Poker
Your image: Running well
Opponent's image: A little tilty
Your hand: 3s 2s

This hand took place between Whitelime and Present. You'll be standing in for Present. Thanks to High Stakes Report for the hand history

The setup: This has been a seesaw battle on two tables and you're up about 4 buy ins on your opponent total. You've been running pretty well and whitelime seems a little tilted, but he is a long-time regular at higher stakes.

This hand you're dealt 32s. Whitelime raises 3x and you call. You flop a flush draw and a gutshot:

As 5h Qs

You check, Whitelime bets $2000, you raise to $6800, Whitelime re-raises to $19200, you call.

You turn the flush with the Ts. You bet $16000, and Whitelime raises all-in to $63473.75. What's your play?

Inaugural $3000 poker tourney at Hard Rock

Barry Gibb, big-money poker and cards flying on a Friday, how good can it get?
Especially if you're John Stevenson. Or Gary Flur.
Those two were among the locals sitting at Barry Gibb's table at the Seminole Hard Rock and Casino Friday, for the opening hands of the casino's first big-money charity tournament.
By rules of the recently negotiated compact between the Seminoles and the state (see John Holland's story here), the Hard Rock can hold six big-money tournaments a year, providing a cut of it goes to charity.
In this case, 20 percent of the entry fee went toward the Miami Beach Health Foundation, which Gibb co-chairs. (Accounting question: If you play in a poker tournament where you can win money, but some goes to charity, can you write it off? Trying to find that one out...)
About 90 people showed up for Friday, the first day of play. The tournament is also taking entrants on Saturday. Then those players surviving either of those two opening days meet on Sunday to play it down to a winner.
Back to Gibb. Turns out he plays a little bit in Vegas, according to a family friend, but his wife, Linda, is the real player, he said. A couple of other Gibb relatives also were scattered across the room.
Gibb's friend was a prophet: 55 minutes into the tournament, Linda hit a full house and knocked out Barry, who had a set.
Who are John Stevenson and Gary Flur?
Well, Stevenson owns Stevenson Roofing in Plantation, and was seated next to Gibb (he's also known as "the commissioner" of the basketball court along S.R. A1A and Fort Lauderdale Beach). So when the tournament got ready to start, paparazzi galore started firing off flashbulbs in his eyes. (Apparently Gibb's photo is worth something to celeb photographers.)
"It was kind of cool, no problem," said Stephenson, who like many, plays in bigger tournaments elsewhere in the country, so he was eager to see larger tournaments happen here. (He's the guy in the photo with Gibb. Photo/courtesy of Ralph Notaro/NDM Images)
Flur lives in Plantation Acres and was also at the table, and is a friend of mine, so what the heck, I' m throwing him on the blog here. He's headed out to Vegas for the WSOP in a few days.
2007 WSOP event bracelet winner Fred Goldberg of Plantation showed up, but couldn't play because he had a commitment Sunday. But he said most of the players are the better Hard Rock players, the locals.
