Well, you are not alone! Tournaments are growing bigger all the time.
Before we really get started, lets define poker tournament. Tournaments are poker competitions where all of the players play at the same time and continue to play until only one player is left. The player that is left is the one to take home all the loot!
Tournaments Are Hot!
Why are tournaments such big events? They
- Are fun to play in
- Have low entry fees
- Offer a large prize pool to be won
- Are an inexpensive way for novice poker players to learn how to play the game
- Provide a place for more experienced players gain experience
Types of Tournaments
While there are many different types of poker games played at casinos and online rooms, tournament play is usually reserved for Texas Holdem, Omaha, and 7-card Stud because these games have a large following.
Poker tournaments can have as few as 6 players (single table tournaments) to thousands of players for larger events. Large tournaments consist of many tables, each table having 8 to 10 players. The tables are slowly removed from the tourney as players are eliminated, and players are balanced from table to table as needed. (These are known as multi-table tournaments). Finally all but the last table will be removed and these last 8 to 10 players play until only one of them remains.
Tournament Basics
To play in a tournament players have to pay two fees.
1. They have to pay an entry fee to the poker room hosting the tournament to cover the expenses involved. This gives the player an assigned seat and a set quantity of tournament chips with which to play (these chips have no cash value).
2. Players also pay a buy-in fee. The buy-in fee is held and paid out as prizes. The prize payout differs from tournament to tournament but typically it all goes to the few players fortunate enough to make the final table.
The object of a tournament is to win all of the chips. All tournament players start out with the same quantity of chips to play with and all start playing at the same time. Players play until they lose all of their chips and are then removed from the tournament. A tournament continues non-stop, often for several hours, until only one person remains.
As playing progresses the stakes rise, making it more and more difficult for players with short stacks to remain in the game.
Players are awarded prize money based on their finishing position in the tournament. The top finishers earn the most money with the 1st place winner usually receiving about 30% of the total prize money, the 2nd place winner about 20% and so on.
The number of winners and the size of the payouts depend upon the rules for the tournament being played and the number of people playing.
Re-buys and Add-ons
Some poker tournaments allow players a re-buy option. This re-buy option allows players to purchase more chips if they run out of them at the start of the tournament. A player can purchase the same number of chips that he/she started the tournament with. Some poker tournaments allow unlimited re-buys during the first hour of play, while other tournaments allow only a single re-buy.
An add-on option is similar to the re-buy option. Add-ons differ in that they are usually only offered once at the end of the re-buy period and can be purchased regardless of how many chips you have. As the name implies, these chips are added on to your stack of chips.
All proceeds from re-buys and add-ons are added to the prize pool less house fees (if applicable).
Betting
Tournament betting is structured with the betting limit increasing regularly. The changes in betting limits occur differently depending on the tournament; some are timed while some increase the limit after a set number of rounds are played.
Balancing and Collapsing Tables
Larger tournaments start out with more than one table, each having 8 to 10 players. As the tournament progresses players will be eliminated and the number of players at each table will not remain the same. For the tournament to be fair, the number of players at each table should be the same, so the organizers move players from table to table in an attempt to keep all the tables equally populated.
Balancing is the practice of moving players from full tables to less full tables when the difference is 3 or more players.
Collapsing tables is the practice of removing tables once there are enough empty spaces among the rest of the tables to do so. Thus with 10 player tables when there are 10 empty spaces the players from one table are moved to empty spaces and that table is taken out of play.
And there you have it - the basics of tourney poker. New to the game or an old pro, getting into a tournament can be a great experience. Why not give it a try.

Alleged gambling house raided, shut downThursday, August 14, 2008By Brian Mosely
Detective Brian Crews of the Shelbyville Police Department examines a case of poker chips that were seized from the office of an alleged gaming house raided by authorities Tuesday night. The words on the doors at 101 Tillett Circle say "PRIVATE" and "DO NOT ENTER," but those warnings were ignored by local law enforcement Tuesday night when they raided an alleged gambling house.
Following a four-month investigation, Shelbyville police, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the 17th Judicial District Drug Task Force, and the Tennessee Highway Patrol, along with an area FBI agent, executed a search warrant on the building where high-dollar poker games allegedly took place once a week.
"People were bragging that this was like 'little Tunica,'" said Det. Brian Crews of the Shelbyville Police Department.
The two accused promoters, 38-year-old James Chad Tucker and his wife Christina Tucker, 37, of Meadowlark Drive, were each charged with one count of aggravated gambling promotion -- a class E felony -- and one count of possession of gambling devices, according to jail records.
The couple were booked into Bedford County Jail and released on $6,000 bond. Four dealers and a security guard were also arrested and charged with aggravated gambling promotion.
A total of 26 players were also each cited for misdemeanor gambling and released. All are scheduled to appear in Bedford County General Sessions Court on Sept. 23.
Authorities seized $48,000 in cash, gambling paraphernalia, a small amount of marijuana and firearms, according to a TBI press release.
Crews said he headed up the investigation, which began after he received information about the alleged gambling operation.
"We've conducted surveillance on the building on several nights and we've also had undercover agents in the building," Crews said.
Crews said the Tuckers had a doorman, Victor Gill, providing security for the gaming house and video cameras covering the outside of the building. Two-way radios were allegedly used so that the operators could know when a player would enter the structure.
Once inside, authorities found four commercial poker tables, each with room for 10 players plus the dealer.
"It was high stakes poker games where they were playing Texas hold 'em," Crews said, with one table having a "buy in" of $1,000, another at $500 and two tables with a $200 "buy-in."
"It was no limit, from what we understand," Crews said of the games.
Players would allegedly purchase poker chips from a cash office set up in one corner of the building run by one of the promoters, Crews said. A player could buy extra chips from the table, but most cash transactions allegedly took place in the office, he said.
"Compared to our surveillance, this was a slow night," Crews said, adding that as many as 50 people would sometimes be in attendance at the gaming house, most of whom were from out of town.
Surveillance had been ongoing for several weeks by Crews, Detective Charles Merlo and an unidentified TBI agent.
This building at 101 Tillett Circle, directly behind Ascend Credit Union, was the location of an alleged gaming house that was raided by local authorities Tuesday night. Along with the four gaming tables, a number of chairs, two large flat screen TVs, a police scanner, thousands of poker chips and decks of cards were seized, Crews said.
Players were also treated to a full buffet, free alcohol and cigarettes, Crews said. Two air purifiers to keep the building smoke free were also taken.
So much evidence was taken from the building that it took a large U-Haul truck to carry it away, Crews said.
The TBI were called in because of the size of the operation, Crews said. The raid was conducted by over 25 officers from the TBI, the Drug Task Force and the THP. Crews noted that the Shelbyville police department "simply doesn't have the manpower here to pull off an operation like that without their assistance."
Crews said the gaming house "had gotten out of control."
"They were bringing people in from all over Tennessee, the types of people they were bringing into this town ... they were dangerous people, drug dealers from other areas, as well as people that were arrested for aggravated gambling promotion in another city," Crews said.
The detective was referring to a gambling bust that took place in December 2006 in La Vergne, in which 22 people were arrested, including a couple from Shelbyville, Steven Colbert and Cathy McPherson, who were charged with the promotion of gambling and aggravated gambling, according to a press release from the city of La Vergne.
The pair were two of the 26 people cited for gambling on Tuesday. Crews said the early part of the investigation involved comparing notes with La Vergne authorities about the 2006 arrests.
Crews said the department was sending a message that "this won't be tolerated. It presents a problem for the city as a whole."
"A lot of people think this is a victimless crime, but ask a lot of these guys' wives if this is victimless," Crews said.
Crews also said that police know this isn't the only gaming house in town, stating that others have "opened up over the last few months."
"They've taken off like wildfire; we're just hoping to cut the head of the snake off."

A total of 33 people are facing charges in connection with a raid on an alleged gaming house in Shelbyville Tuesday night.

Lesnar looked like a monster in his debut until wily veteran Frank Mir caught him in a heel hook and submitted him. This time around, he’s facing an opponent who doesn’t possess great ground skills, although Herring was on the ground plenty against guys like Fedor and Nog and survived. Herring is primarily a striker, so expect him to come out firing. Lesnar will no doubt want to take him to the ground, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see a brawl break out. Lesnar has something to prove, and a loss here might prove a quick end to his MMA career. Herring isn’t a cakewalk, however, and his +210 odds against the inexperienced Lesnar is mighty appealing.

GEORGES ST. PIERRE VS. JON FITCH

After starting his career at light-heavyweight, Fitch dropped down to welterweight and has reeled off 8 straight wins, tying Royce Gracie for the UFC record. While he would love to break that record and win the title, he’s facing one of the most skilled fighters in the game today. St. Pierre has speed, punching power and a solid ground game. After disposing of Matt Hughes twice, he’s now poised to rule over the welterweight division like Anderson Silva has done with the middleweights. But while Fitch is a talented fighter, I can’t help but feel that St. Pierre is just better. I’m expecting a first round win for the Canadian-born champion.

On June 25, our son Ian Robert Conway Erbacher was born. His mom, my wife and partner in particle physics crime, Prof. Robin Erbacher, labored some 14 hours to deliver him, pushing rather hard for about three hours at the end. Robins jogging and exercise during pregnancy, well into the eigth month, seemed to pay off here! He was big: 9 lb 4 oz, and 21 inches at birth, but even after the tight squeeze on the way out he was just fine.
We made a somewhat unusual choice with his name. His first name, Ian, is a name that Robin and I both liked. He has two middle names. Robert is for his great grandfather Robert Boche, Robins grandfather, who was a well known geneticist and one of the first people to study the effects of nuclear radiation on living organisms, as part of the Manhattan Project. He passed away last year at the age of 96. Conway is my last name - had to get that in there - and I have two Conway children from my first marriage, both college age now (Jenny is at Berkeley and Alex is starting this fall at the University of Chicago). Robin is the third of three sisters, and the last to have children, so Ian will carry the Erbacher name on.
Ian is special in another way - he was conceived in vitro. (This was due to problems on my end stemming from mumps orchitis when I was a young adultdespite the fact that I previously successfully fathered two children.) Neither Robin nor I had known much about IVF, but ended up learning more than we ever expected about endocrinology and embryology. This technology is incredible. In short, the womans ovaries are stimulated during an otherwise normal cycle to overproduce eggs, the eggs are harvested, fertilized, and if all goes well, up to about three of the fertilized pre-embryos, which at this stage have divided to about 6-8 cells, are put back into the womb on day 3. Some clinics wait until day 5, at which stage the pre-embryos are blastocysts. Not all 6-8 cell embryos make it to the blastocyst stage; only about a quarter or so do. Waiting for day 5 can be emotionally trying for the couple.
So its a game of statistics and skill. In our case, we were able to get 11 eggs from Robin, of which 9 were mature enough to fertilize. Of these they managed to successfully fertilize 6, using a micromanipulation technique called intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). They hold the egg with a micropipette, suck up one of the sperm with a microscopic needle, somehow having cut the tail off, and inject the sperm head into the egg. This is, to my mind, one of the greatest feats of modern medicineI am still in awe.

First off, Motion X Poker. At first it resembles video draw poker, but as soon as you start playing youll see how wrong you were. Its a dice game where the six sides of each die are ace, king, queen, jack, ten and nine. The goal is to beat the dealers after three rolls of the dice. Standard poker hand values apply except that straights trump full-houses. I learned that the hard way. (Note to self, read directions.)
The game uses the iPhone accelerometer—meaning you roll by shaking your hand as if you were actually casting real dice. It will either be a fun gimmick or an annoyance at first, but in time it feels very natural. You chose which dice to keep between rolls via the touchscreen. The game also has some added replay value by rewarding winning streaks and other with new die, table designs and reward gems. The game is $4.99 and worth it.
I was skeptical of Apples Texas Holdem game at first. I have never been one to enjoy playing holdem against a computer and the $9.99 price tag seemed high to me. However, the game has won me over in spades.
Keep in mind, if you buy a poker game branded for any console youll be paying somewhere between $20 and $50. Most mobile phone games from the cell network go for $4.99 and are close to unplayable. After about a hour of game play, I can say that the iPhones Texas Holdem is the most fun holdem game available for any system, mobile or otherwise.
First off, the graphics way surpass what I thought the platform was capable of. The player models are limited in their actions, but better looking than the poker games on the Xbox. I can even forgive the dealers resemblance to an ex-NSync singer. No, not him, the other guy.
The game play is easy and intuitive. Tap the screen to check, drag your cards to the center of the table to fold. Turn the screen sideways to change your first-person perspective into an overview of the table (similar to on-line poker sites.) The table views allows for a more speedy game. No need to wait to fold and get on to the next hand. That speed is something missing from nearly all other poker games Ive played.
The only thing this game is missing is the ability to play for money. The functionality for wireless multiplayer is there, but the legality isnt. You can still keep track of your imaginary bankroll and use it to play in higher stakes venues with, Im guessing, smarter AI. There are good in-game statistics so you can track your progress. All-in-all, this is a superior training exercise than playing free poker on-line, but that isnt saying much.

So, why are we ripping off Tom Petty with the title of this entry? Because any writer can tell you that it's true--waiting is hard. And there's so much of it to do. You send off queries and wait. Then you send off fulls and wait. You wait for contracts and agent offers, and then for edits and galleys and cover art and...

And release dates.

That's the ordeal through which we have so recently suffered. See, last year, we decided we wanted to write for people other than ourselves. So we joined the RWA, started researching and writing, and it has been a roller coaster ride.

In the last seven months, we've written everything from sensual contemporary to urban fantasy to erotic paranormal romance. We've contracted nine stories, novellas, and novels with four different e-publishers but, until this past Friday, had nothing for sale. A typical conversation went like this:

Potential Reader: Oh, this all sounds very intriguing. Where can I buy these?
Us: ...you can't. Not yet. But soon!

Let's just say being contracted but not released was like being in limbo. You know you've reached some sort of afterlife, but you're not quite sure yet which way you're going. LOL Are you legit, or a complete fraud? Will the entire world soon know that you write some good stuff...or will they brand you as tired, trite, and treacly? (And overly addicted to alliteration?)

It got pretty bad. We were freaking out. It got so bad that, in the days leading up to our first release, we had to distract ourselves. Work wasn't going to...well, work. So, instead, we spent the greater portion of last week watching Johnny Depp movies and playing video games to kill the nervous energy.

But this past Friday settled our nerves a bit. Moonshine is now available, and we feel a bit more like Real Writers. We stared at the buy link on the website (maybe for an hour or so) and then broke out the champagne and tiramisu. I don't think we'll do this with every release, since we have eight more coming over the rest of the year and the beginning of next, but it was a must for this first one.

We've always known we loved writing. What we didn't know was that we would love writing as a career just as much. It's been a wild ride, one that we hope is nowhere near over, and we adore every minute of it.
