After the big trip to New York, I wasted in no time in setting off for another trip. Up next, a trip to Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana. The casino underwent a gigantic renovation recently, costing half a billion to complete, and the grand re-opening was scheduled for August 8. As it turned out, the Smashing Pumpkins were brought in to play at the new theatre called The Venue, which is conveniently located only up a staircase and down the hall from the casino. As a Pumpkins fan and gambler, this was a fortuitous combination I could not pass up. So, I hooked up with my boy Q and we were off.
I got to the casino and easily found my way to the poker room. Wow! This is the closest thing I've seen to a Vegas type poker room outside Sin City. 34 tables in all, a very nice front desk/brush area, and a two tiered room (with the upper tier reserved for nosebleed stakes), this place was very nice. Of course, everything was brand new, including the tables, a commemorative set of chips for the grand re-opening, the electronic waitlist, and (unfortunately) the dealers.
The wait list process was a little cumbersome. I didn't call ahead to get on the list and by the time I got to the room there was a wait of about 2o people on the 1/2 No Limit game. Most of these were call-ins though so I was able to get a seat in about 30 minutes or so. Not bad, but they could have easily opened another table or two while I was waiting and there would have been no wait at all. I'm sure that is something that will be worked out with a little more experience.
The dealers weren't so good. Many of them had a very difficult time keeping the action moving, making decisions when a card was inadvertently exposed, etc. One cool thing was that the room has chip runners, meaning the dealers were not selling chips, which kept the action moving. Once the dealers get some more experience, the play should be pretty quick at Horseshoe. There is a lot of space in the room, as opposed to most of the other rooms I've frequented. This is a very good thing!
I sat down about 1:45 pm or so and started playing. I didn't have much in the way of hands for most of the session. In fact, the entire 6+ hours I played, I only wound up showing my cards on two hands. I'll dissect a few hands here for your reading pleasure.
Hand #1. Guy 2 seats to my right has been splashing around quite a bit, raising with a lot of garbage. He likes to talk a lot and is generally your typical table captain. He pops it up to 12 preflop. I look down at pocket sevens in the small blind. I might consider folding here since only one other person had limped into the hand and I'm out of position. But, given the aggressive nature of the captain, I decided to call. Other guy calls. Flop comes down 678 rainbow. Not a perfect hand for a set but beggars can't be choosers. I check, the limper checks and captain bets 25 into our $36 pot. I've got the captain covered and think he's likely on an overpair or just pushing around. But I'm not taking any chances. I push all in for another 100 or so. The limper folds and the captain goes deep into the tank. After a minute or so, he decides to call me and turns over pocket nines. He has an overpair and open ended straight draw. Rag on the turn and the river is an eight to fill me up. Nice pot and suddenly I'm up about $200 or a buy-in.
Hand #2. I'm on the button and about 5 people limp in to me. I look down at A8 off suit. I don't usually play this kind of hand but since I'm on the button decide to see a flop. Small Blind completes and BB checks. Flop comes down A88, bingo! SB leads out for $15 into the $14 pot. I'm disappointed as it folds around to me. I smooth call, wanting to extract as much as possible out of senor SB. The turn is a rag and he bets out another $20. Again I smooth call. River is yet another rag and SB bets out $30. This time I think about it for a while and raise another $90, figuring with $158 in the pot any eight and any big ace are likely to call me here. He goes into the tank forever and finally (argh!) mucks his hand. He shows an Ace as he folds. Dang it, I guess I raised a little too much. But, I've added to my growing stack.
Hand #3. Shortly before dinner, I finally look down at a premium pair in late position, spying AA. I'm in late position and there are four limpers in ahead of me. I raise up to $12 and get 3 callers (yikes!). Flop comes down T73, 2 diamonds. Checked to me and I bet out $20 into the $52 pot. Guy in 3rd position raises it up to $60 and it folds around to me. Did he hit a set? Maybe but I'm putting him on something more like pocket Queens or Jacks. This guy isn't a very good player and the only set I saw him play all night he slow played all the way to the river. I re-popped up to $120. Guy has about $300 behind, a nice sized stack. He fairly quickly calls me. Turn is a beautiful, wondrous, glorious Ace, I'm now sitting on the nuts. Dude checks to me and I bet out another $75 into this $300 pot. He fairly quickly calls. River is another seven, pairing the board and giving me a full boat. The only hand that beats me here is pocket 7s, which I thought was a possibility but I tell myself that's monster-under-the-bed type thinking. He checks to me and I fire out another $75. He's got about $150 left behind and the pot is already around $450. I think I've bet little enough for him to call, especially with such a big pot. He thinks for literally 3-4 minutes before finally folding. ARGGGGH! He was either on his Kings, Queens or Jacks, or maybe a flush draw. Later he tries to tell me he had pocket 2s, meaning he folded twos full of sevens. I don't believe that for a second. I lose a little on a couple speculative hands and finish the night up $430, up over two buy-ins. I like this poker room!
As an aside, the place also features 2 Poker Tek tables, which basically is an automated poker table, meaning no dealers, no chips, etc. It's basically playing computerized poker but you're playing against other people that are sitting at the table. The advantages of this are quicker games, no tipping the dealer required and lower rake taken from the hands. The disadvantage is primarily that there are no real cards, chips, etc. I'll try it out next time I'm there.
Q and I also checked out dinner. The line to the buffet was unbelievably long so we headed for a little Asian noodle shop. It was ok, they had a few dim sum dishes that I am especially fond of. So I snagged some of that and scarfed down dinner. This place could use more smaller restaurants besides the buffet and definitely could use more seating. Next up, The Venue, for Pumpkin-time!
The room was interesting, it was a gigantic theater. I'm sure that the set-up varies from show to show. The night before the Pumpkins played, Bette Midler opened the room. I'm pretty sure the general admittance area didn't exist for her show, hard to see all the boomers moshing it up to Wind Beneath My Wings. I digress.
For the Pumpkins, the entire downstairs was standing room, GA. It probably could have held somewhere in the neighborhood of five thousand people in the downstairs alone. Pumpkins didn't come close to filling it though. In the upstairs, there was a balcony area with what looked like fairly limited seating, although to be honest I didn't really take a good look. The balcony was quite a long ways back from the stage, those seats would not have been good for this show. Interestingly, the floor itself was concrete but during the show when everyone was jumping around you could feel the floor bouncing, almost like it was made of rubber. I kept envisioning the pulsing mass of people collapsing through the floor and landing one story down in the middle of a roulette game or something!
Pumpkins put on an interesting show. They were on stage for 2 1/2 hours and played a few of the hits. They also played a couple of really long songs that literally lasted about 50 minutes or so between the 2 of them. Here is a review of a similar show done the night before that seems like it had a very similar setlist. Highlights of the show for me included classic Mayonnaise, the previously mentioned long rock out to America, and from way back Rhinoceros. Unfortunately, there were some lowlights. First, the sound really sucked. I don't know if it was the room or the band, but at many points you couldn't hear Corgan's guitar and often couldn't hear his vocals. Huh? Second, I wasn't very into the lengthy Floyd cover they did. The acoustic set in the middle of the show was fairly average and the final encore, when the entire band stood front stage and played kazoos was sublime and a little too much for me. Overall, I'm glad I saw the band but it left a bit to be desired.
On the other hand, Q has been a big Pumpkins fan for a long time. He's been a little grouchy the band hasn't played Chicago once since their reunion last year. I don't think this show really helped the cause. I really don't want to be to blame for his dissocation with his favorite band but I think it may be too late for that. Bummer!

Been busy the last few weeks with another vacation, last few weeks of work, and a trip to school to move out of my old apartment and into my new one...
Anyways, I was able to play at the brand spankin' new Horseshoe casino in Hammond, IN last Thursday night for a few hours. I took Friday off and went with a friend after work. We arrived at the casino around 9:15pm. Upon walking in the casino I was awestruck - this place is HUGE! I felt like I was in Vegas...the casino is equivalent to a giant warehouse with slots, table games and video poker as far as the eye can see. We wandered over to the poker room and put our names on the 1/2 NL list which had about 12 people in front of us.
We had to wait 30-40 minutes for seats to open up, which was strange because when we got to the table there were 3 empty chairs...hmmm. I've read that it's very easy to walk in and sit down at a table to bypass the waiting list and there really isn't a way for anyone to figure this out - hopefully the staff fixes this leak.
The poker room is absolutely beautiful. There are a few chandeliers hanging for the ceiling and 7-8 plasma TVs line the walls with various sporting events on, which was great to catch the Bears pre-season highlights. The tables are 9-handed, which give a little extra room for all of the players and the chairs were very comfortable. The only complaint about the room was that it was a little chilly inside, so I would recommend bringing a sweatshirt or wearing pants so you aren't freezing after an hour.
The dealers ranged from average to excellent. One dealer looked new but he had decent deal speed and was friendly, so absolutely no complaints there. The chiprunners were very fast and the floor people were addressing the various problems around the room. Anyways, so around 10:00 my name gets called and I head over to the table. They had ~30 tables going - the room was packed. I think they had 7-8 1/2NL games running but they were also running 2/5, 5/10, 10/25 NL, 2/5 PLO, 3/6, 6/12, 20/40 limit, and had an interest list going for 5/10 O/8 - so plenty of variety.
I played for about 3 hours and ended - $227. The best 5 hands I saw all night were TT, 55, A8o, A6s, and KQo... which was tough because the table was SO juicy. I sat in the 1 seat, which sucked because you can't see the players in the 8 and 9 seat without looking out over the table. Anyways, there was one MEGA-fish who probably called preflop about 80% of the time and played almost everything to the river as long as the price wasn't too much. Unfortunately I couldn't get him to pay me off with anything because #1 - I rarely had something and #2 - when I did he would fold. This guy called a $50 river bet after abet and a call with 76 on an 9TJA8 board (both of the other players had Qs obviously). Anyways, my big hand was with 55 in the BB. Like 7 to the flop (very common) of 5T8 two spades. SB bet $10 and I just called - I should have raised on this drawy board. The turn was a 3x and I bet $30 and got two callers. The river was a Qx putting no flush out there. SB checked, I bet $50, mega-fish folded and SB raised AI. I had like $90 in front of me so this was an auto-call and of course the SB flipped J9...d'oh. This guys play helped save me $30+ on a later hand if I can take some consolation.
I politely asked the dealer to hold my spot as I got up to go to the bathroom / hit up the ATM for another $200 to sit back in the game. It was nice to take a little 5-minute breather having lost the most in one pot in my poker career. After putting it in perspective (this is 2 online buy-ins...no big deal) I was able to play pretty well the rest of the night. Unfortunately I was card dead and the only decent sized pot I won was with KQ when I c/r a $10 bet and a call to $50 on a KQ7 board - they both folded :(. Basically, this table had 5+ people to every flop and everyone pretty much sucked or was very easy to assign a range. I was involved in another pot with the guy who stacked me with his rivered straight. I'm in the BB with TT and there are like 6 callers around to me and I just checked (could have raised but it's hard to play TT in EP when 5 people will call behind you). Flop was 337, I bet $10 and got two callers. Turn was some other small card and I bet $15. Mega-fish folded and the guy who stacked me hemmed and hawed and reluctantly called. I immediately whispered to my friend, "he has a 3". He quickly checked the 9 river and I checked behind and he showed a 3. Dealer - where was my 10 to get my stack back?
All in all, the room was beautiful, the players were garbage, and I need to adjust to the bad players by playing very, very straightforward.

I guess I owe Wil an ice cream cone.
He had a pretty solid session on Thursday night - playing well and catching very well. After the game we made a quick run to Baskin-Robbins, and he was nice enough to buy me a cone. I did not run well that night.
Sunday was a different story. I feel that I played very well, as well as I have in awhile. I had a strong handle on the game, and felt my read was pinpoint in its accuracy. I also found either the cards or the opportunities to make some money, and those cards and opportunities are not always there.
Wil was also playing a little faster and looser than he typically does, probably riding the wave of his Thursday night success.
I played a hand head's up against Wil that he did not enjoy. I'm not going to say I played it perfectly, by any stretch, but I did enjoy the thought process and gamesmanship that went into it.
I was in middle position, in a 1/2 NLHE ring game with 8 or 9 at the table, and raised it to $11 with Ah4h. If memory serves, I opened the pot, though there may have been one limper. Occasionally I'll fold this hand here, and much of the time at this table I'll limp. I was feeling particularly frisky, and thought I was playing well after the flop. So I raised.
The action folded to Wil in the small blind; he paused and then raised to $30 total. The blinds (and limper?) folded to me. I considered the situation and called. Wil's range is fairly tight here, at least for him, but he knows my range is really broad, so he sought to put pressure on me, define my hand, and isolate. His range is probably 1/2 of my opening range in this position. I put him on any pocket pair 7s or better, and Ace-King, Ace Queen (or even AT suited or bigger). He doesn't like that he's in the small blind here, but if he can isolate, he's feeling comfortable enough to make this three-bet with good middle pairs, in my opinion.
The flop comes 855 with two hearts, giving me a four-flush. My Ace would also be good against most of his range. With about $65 in the pot, Wil makes a continuation be of $50. To me, this doesn't narrow his range much. He might elect to check with a big pair, inducing me to bet, or he might bet right out. With Jacks or smaller, and with a big Ace, I think he makes this bet most of the time, hoping to take down the pot, or cause me to make a bad call.
I consider my options here. There's about $115 in the pot and Wil has about $220 left, if memory serves.
I can call here with my flush draw and hope to hit on the turn. I'm getting just better than 2-to-1 on my money, and I'm about 4-to-1 to catch my flush card. If I do hit my flush, I can get paid a bit on a later street, but Wil may not pay me much more unless he has JJ - KK with one heart. This may or may not be a profitable decision, and puts no pressure on my opponent.
I can also fold. I played what amounts to a garbage hand and my opponent has shown a lot of strength by re-raising in the small blind and then leading into me for 75-80% of the pot. I'm am undoubtedly behind, and potentially only my flush draw is good.
I can raise on a semi-bluff. When I evaluate this option, I need to consider how much fold equity I have. What can I hold that Wil would be concerned about? Having a 5 in my hand for flopped trips is possible, given the way I play, but not that likely. Wil may write off losing to flopped trips with a 5 as "the cost of doing business". Of course, in this particular case I had a 4 in my hand, so it is obviously within my range. I could have a pocket pair of 8s, giving me a flopped boat. He isn't expecting a monster. In this case I probably would call behind most of the time, though a small raise is probably my best option. If Wil has an over pair I put him to a really tough decision with a small raise. He has to think about it, at least. I could have an overpair to his pocket pair, if he has one. It is entirely conceivable that I'd smooth call his re-raise pre-flop with KK or AA. I've done it before, and I'll do it again. And he knows it. Finally, if he does have an A-X hand, he probably has to fold to any raise of mine. Even 66 in my hand would put him in bad shape.
I elect to raise on a semi-bluff. I figure to have 9 flush outs (he could have a flopped boat) and possibly 3 Ace outs. As we discussed, if he holds just a big Ace, he probably has to fold to my raise. This creates a terrific dynamic for me in that he'll fold in occasions where I'm dominated (i.e. he has a bigger Ace) and he'll call/shove in situations where my Ace is live, which gives me 14 full outs (barring a full house). With 14 outs against an overpair, I am a 2-to-3 underdog (including 88 in his range), with enough money in the pot to justify getting it all in. Factor in my fold equity, and I think this is a strong decision.
The amount of my raise may not be as interesting a question as you think. Wil just put in a $50 bet, and there's $65 in there on the flop. The amount of my call will make the pot $165 and Wil has just over $200 remaining. He knows that if he just calls a small raise on the flop that he will face a big decision on the turn. If he has a very strong read on me, however, he can actually just call a small raise from me and make a big bet into a safe turn card. Because of that, I am well served by making a fairly significant re-raise, from $110 on top of his bet, up to an all-in bet.
I do not perform this thorough of an analysis, and decide that a small re-raise will actually make him think harder and put me on a stronger hand. I re-raise him to $110, or just $60 on top of his initial $50. My rationale is that I'm forcing him to make a decision for all of his chips even though I've just made a small raise. This is a bad analysis on my part as he could actually afford to call the flop and fold the turn if a heart came (if he thought that helped me).
I believe Wil evaluated it the same way I did in the heat of the moment and re-raised all-in for his last $200+. With $445 or more in the pot, I only had to call $160 more, I was getting almost 3 to 1. I also "knew" that Wil didn't have an Ace in his hand, and thus figured to be a 3-to-2 favorite over my holding. Getting great odds to draw, I called his bet. [Wil could have held AA here, for certain. Two things caused me to diminish this likelihood. First, I had an Ace, meaning there were only three combinations of AA left in the deck. Second, I had a feeling that he did not. Sometimes I have a feeling about something, or sometimes my opponent may have a baby tell that gives away a little something, and I go with it. These feelings are rare, but frighteningly accurate.]
The turn was a blank and the river was the A of diamonds. Wil said, "well, you called my shove, so you must be good".
I declared "umm... Aces and Fives?" His eyes shot daggers, and he mucked his cards as I opened my Ah 4h and sheepishly raked in the pot. I attribute my sheepishness more to Wil's reaction than my plan, in retrospect. I occasionally feel sheepish or guilty when I suck out, but if I have the odds to do so, I wouldn't have it any other way (would I rather not hit?)
I didn't have to risk all of that money with a bad Ace, even a suited one, pre-flop, but I like all of my decisions even in hindsight. If I could change one thing, it would be the size of my raise on the turn; it should have been bigger. As it turns out, it didn't affect the hand. Wil probably reraises on the turn either way.
What did Wil have? Based on the information on all streets, I'm going to guess QQ. It could have been KK and JJ is a possibility, but with TT or smaller, I believe he would have a hard time shoving on the turn.

my thumb in my car door. I decided to stop over by the Waffle House not too far from the golf course this morning. As I'm trying to figure out if the restaurant is open, I step out of the car and slam the door - except I forgot about my thumb! YYYEEEEAAAAAOUUCCCHHH...! I looked at my thumb and it had turned blue-black instantly. Needless to say, I stuck my thumb in a glass of ice as I waited for my breakfast.
Thankfully, the round wasn't too bad with the sore thumb. I made some great putts to save par several times today, but continued to wonder hole after hole how I was going to straighten out my driver. On the 7th hole (my 16th) I put my approach shot in the bunker. As I was raking the bunker after my shot, I accidently caught my thumb in the pocket of my shorts and OUUUUUUIIIII...! Now, that really hurt! I actually had to stop raking to take a few deep breaths.
My housing from Lima, OH from 2 years ago came out to watch me play on Sat. Janice was "thanking" me when her alarm rang at 5am this morning. After showing them my thumb, Charlie suggested that in order to release the pressure in my thumb, he would - if he had one - put a little drill bit in the nail... NOT! We stopped by the EMT parked in the parking lot on the way out and they couldn't help me, but the driver kept nodding his head in agreement when I told him about the drill bit theory. :-p
Just drove into Hammond, IN tonight from Angola, IN. A bunch of the FUTURES Tour pros played in a fund raising pro-am organized by the Junior Achievement program. Ended up coming in 3rd with my rowdy amateur players! We parred a Par 5... what a big NO NO in a pro-am!
Staying in a Red Roof Inn in the next state over in Lansing, IL. The internet here keeps dropping and it's driving me crazy! Can you imagine that just a few years ago we were using dial-up?!!.

Construction of a new casino is progressing ahead of schedule with the opening expected in late summer instead of early fall, according to Rick Mazer, Indiana regional president and general manager of Horseshoe Casino, Hammond.
The Horseshoe project includes construction of new gaming rooms, new restaurants and a new theater designed to draw Las Vegas-style entertainment to the facility. The design is comparable to any of the finest casinos in Las Vegas, Mazer said.
When the expanded casino opens, Mazer said he expects the full-time payroll to jump from around 2,300 employees to 2,700.
There are other, noticeable changes too. All the old chips are being replaced, and a timeline for redemption of existing chips is being established. Gaming equipment also will have to be moved.
Mayor Tom McDermott said this major construction project represents a significant commitment by Harrahs Corp . to the city of Hammond. It was a difficult decision to shut down the marina for a year, Im not going to lie, McDermott said. But improvements at the marina will help bring back its loyal users.
Milan Kruzynski, director of the Port Authority, said that themarina is about 17 years old. This gave us an opportunity to update everything, Kruzynski said.
The Horseshoe construction caused the marina to reconfigure all the docking slips. Two years ago, there were 982 slips, and this year. Part of the marina area is still tied up with construction, and there will be 692 slips. But, the final slip count will be around 900 in 2009 when all work is completed.
The marina will also offer day rental of small slips for personal watercraft often used by boat owners. He said this was done as a convenience for boaters, who often dont have a place to dock their smaller craft near their boat slip.
As part of the construction project the harbor was dredged and that sand was used to replenish Lakefront Beach. It rivals the beach at the dunes, he said.
McDermott said the improvements at the marina and the casino will be an economic boon to the local community.
The 200 to 300 additional full-time jobs that will be added at the casino will help the local economy. McDermott said Horseshoe has been employed local residents.
The investment will also increase the assessed value and lower the tax rate in the city.
McDermott said the location as the first casino in Indiana nearest Chicago has been helpful and he expects the new casino to be an even bigger draw. s going to be a lot more visitors to the Hammond marina, McDermott said.

Management by Trust Instead of Fear By Michael Campbell. Management by trust instead of fear. How positive rewards can get people to do what you want, be part of the team and work together in a happy environment. Management is the act of directing, guiding, controlling, administrating for a purpose. How one "manages" however, is usually up to the individual. Management of people, like teaching and training usually relies on positive or negative reinforcement for ones actions. Positive reinforcement can be thought of as building trust, whereas negative reinforcement can be thought of as spreading fear. Fear focuses on what was done wrong, puts people down, belittles them, makes them feel unworthy. Trust focuses on what was done right, looks at how much was achieved, makes people happy and more likely to perform even better the next time. Fear yells at the employees and makes public humiliation a weapon. People will start avoiding public contact with the manager. Trust talks quietly and never reprimands one employee in front of another. Everything that is said remains private, with one to one meetings held in a separate room. Fear says don't do this, or you're fired, don't do that, or you're fired. Fear holds the job and never gives a sense it is truly yours. Trust leads by example and says do this, do that, gives power and decision making capability to the employee, making them feel the job is truly theirs to do. No one likes a manager that uses fear. Employee turnover is likely to be very high. Employees probably won't care. They just punch the clock to get a paycheck. Everyone likes someone they can trust. With trust, employees are likely to put in years of service and take pride in the work they do. Fear leads to animosity and bitterness between employees. They are not likely to develop friendships or good will towards each other. They are likely to compete against each other, rather than the true competition. Trust creates team players, employees that work together for the common good of the organization, realizing they are "in the same boat." Together - as a company - they sink or swim. Fear leads employees to say, it wasn't me, it was like that when I found it, I don't know. Trust leads employees to be accountable for their actions, to learn from mistakes, so everyone can help each other from preventing the same mistake from happening again. Fear destroys creativity and freezes employees into predictable mindless patterns, where they are afraid of change and self improvement. Trust spawns creativity where employees constantly think about better ways of doing their jobs, to anticipate and adapt to change, and not be afraid of failure, or trying new things. As you can see, all behavior can be modified quite simply by using positive reinforcement. If the reinforcement happens at the same time as the action, it increases the likelihood that the positive action will happen again. By being a positive person, setting a good example, offering encouragement, forgiving mistakes, talking quietly, people are more likely to listen to you. Especially if you reward them for a job well done. It could be a simple pat on the back, a handshake, or other little bonus like getting off early. That's the most important thing of all, to recognize all the achievements, even the small ones. Say good catch if someone prevents a mistake. Say good job to a person in front of the other employees and supervisors. For positive reinforcement, recognition of an achievement, is the greatest motivator of all. Remember, fear is all about punishment. It is an absence of love and compassion. It brings up painful emotions like anxiety, apprehension and dread. It is impending danger and the expectation of evil. Trust is all about goodness. It is faith and belief in the integrity, confidence, reliance, and friendship of another person. It is certainty, dependence, assurance, an entirely positive state of mind. What type of teacher, trainer, parent and manager will you be?
