http://www.networkworld.com/nlsecidmgmt155947 By Dave KearnsLast issue, we examined the difference between what are termed
and identity management
schemes. Enterprise-centric identity management, we postulated,
is really all about tying together all the activities and
attributes of a single entity into a readily accessible (and
reportable and auditable) form; while user-centric identity is
about keeping various parts of your online life totally
separated so that they arent accessible and no report can be
drawn. I ended the newsletter by asking if there was a way to
unify these two seemingly disparate objectives. And I believe
there is.

Having never worm UA before, their Heat Gear sleeveless T is the first piece of UA I've ever tried. I now have an entire drawer dedicated exclusively to my UA, with almost something for every one of their Heat Gear, Cold Gear, Turf Gear, and Snow Gear lines, and usually in multiple colors.

Whether at the gym or on the field, I cannot over emphasize how effectively UA really works. The compression Heat Gear is truly amazing - not only does it keep you cool and dry during the most intensive of exercises, that added 'super hero' feel just gives you that much more drive to push that extra rep, do that extra lap, or pull for that final yard. Not only does the Heat Gear material just look cool, it compresses to your skin with the intensity of your game, and delivers every bit as much as UA advertises. This material literally makes Dry-Fit feel like a potato sack. At a recent Halloween party, I had UA underneath USGI Marine Corp dress blues, and danced all night without so much as a drip of sweat on my forehead.

UA Customer Support, by the way, is also top notch. Whatever your question may be regarding their product, sizing, etc. these guys really take good care of you.

Now go out and play.

That's it. It's time to accept it. Winter's here. I don't care how much everyone is screaming about Global Warming. Cold is cold. And when you're riding during the winter it feels that much colder. Wind chill is horrible. Compound the factor of speed. The faster you go the more the temperature drops. So the main idea behind this months TAB. How to survive the winter on your motorcycle.
Some of you silly bastards like cold weather. I'll never understand that. Maybe it's because I'm a skinny white boy. Not much blubber to hold in the heat. I live in the south for a reason. But even in the dirty dirty it gets cold once in a while. When the temp drops and the wind picks up I'm grabbing every piece of heavy clothing I can wear at once. If I look like the little brother from a Christmas story when I'm done, so be it. Hell, I'll wear my underoo's on the outside if it'll keep my ass warm. Maybe that's a bit extreme.
For those of us hardcore (read: stupid) enough to ride year round we need to get a little creative when thinking of how to keep warm while riding in the winter months. Ok, so we all ride fighters and are not exactly particular about having fairing's. So to get around our stubbornness we need to try and break the wind as much as possible.
Hands, being the first line of defense. Winter gloves are usually a good idea. Something with Gore-Tex or Thinsulate is a plus. Just about every major motorcycle apparel manufacturer offers a winter glove. Most can be had for under $80 with varying stages of protection and insulation from the elements. But aside from going out and buying a name brand glove. There are other steps you can take before you shell out some dough on specialty gloves. Take a run down to either the local grocer, hardware, or auto parts store and pick up a box of disposable latex gloves. These are great for holding in your natural body heat. And because they are form fitting, you can wear them inside your riding gloves as extra insulation. Some people may have a problem with latex. In which case, a sporting goods store or outdoor outlet carry glove liners. Moving up the sleeve, your wrists are prone to windblast. Even if you wear full gauntlet gloves, when in the riding position and moving around your sleeves can creep up and let in the wind. Try a pair of wristbands. A definite cheap trick for keeping the wind out of your sleeves.
As far as your upper body is concerned. This is going to take the brunt of the cold. Lack of a windscreen puts you right out there for old man winter to lay into you with a constant body blow. Heavy shirts are a must, obviously. But too many of these at once cannot only be uncomfortable, but restrict movement. Thermal shirts are always a plus. Combined with a sweater and lined jacket. But try some of those cool max shirts as a base to your layers. Anything to wick away moisture from your body is going to keep you that much warmer. If your jacket lets through wind in certain areas try and pin point them from the inside. Seams, vents, perforation. The fix for this is one that holds the world together. Duct tape. Yup, patch them up on the inside so the breeze doesn't make its way through. Plus, if you find yourself needing a piece for a quick fix on the road. there you go. Lastly, a thin nylon windbreaker under the jacket can be a great help. Or even your rain jacket over top.
Your head and face are super sensitive. Good full-face lids with closable vents are always the way to go. If you're in an area that gets lots of snow and super low temps, you may want to look into snowmobile helmets for the winter. The ones with heated visors would be a great option. Of course one of the most common ways to keep your head warm is wearing a beanie under your lid. If that's too thick for a comfortable fit, try the sporting goods and ski shops for balaclava's. The ones made of nylon are typically very thin. If you can get one that fits around your neck and face you're that much ahead of the game. If you want to be super biker, there's always the classic bandanna too. This will at least keep the wind off your face and your breath will keep your face warm. Keep breath mints handy though. One more cheap trick for cutting down fog and retaining heat. If your helmet doesn't offer a breath deflector you can make one out of duct tape. Double up the tape and form it to fit your face. Then tape it right to the inside of the chin bar. Just be sure not to leave any adhesive exposed. Most of us don't need our mustaches waxed.
The feet and knees are always in the breeze. Ski socks are a definite plus. The longer the better too. Insulated boots are really the only way to go. The less wind that can get in the better. A great piece of gear I found was MX knee and shin guards. These are similar to Hockey shin guards. Plastic caps with foam padding and fabric liners. Also makes for another safety alternative. The cool part about these is they are thin enough to wear under loose fitting pants. The plastic blocks the wind very well while the foam helps to retain heat. These are fairly inexpensive too. They can be had for under $40. Some even under $25. For the rest of your lower extremities, double up on pants. Sweat pants, Track pants, thermals, etc.
Of course there's always the option of heated riding gear. These can get pricey but if you plan to ride in very cold climates, it's probably a smart investment. The cheaper method is the hand warmer packs. They're fairly cheap and some last up to 8 hours. If you plan on doing some long riding, I would suggest getting some for the trip. You can put them in your shoes to keep your feet warm, in your gloves to help out your hands and any place else you feel is subjected to direct cold.
So now that you look like a reincarnation of the Michelin Man, what can we do to the bike that will help you out with out totally goobering it up? Well, again, anything that can block the wind will help. Like stated earlier, your hands are the first line of defense. Dirtbike style hand guards will keep some of the wind off your mitts. If you want to keep them toasty you can invest in some grip heaters also. Now Grip heaters are a bit limited as they really only work the palm of your hand. With the hand guards in place as well your fingers will thank you. Plus, if your bike has that kind of ruff and tumble look going for it, they'll fit right in.
Another, idea that struck me. Heated seats. This is actually a fairly simple idea. You can pull them from any factory-equipped car. Try the local junkyards. Just make sure they can bench test them before you walk out the door. You'll want the thermostat control with this, which can be mounted under the tail for adjustment while riding. Basically, heated seats are no more then a heating pad element that sits under the upholstery, a top the padding. The heating elements average about 100-140 degrees F. I did a search for “Upholstery Heating Elements” and came up with some good results and even installation instructions and tutorials for various seats. Both OEM and retro fits.
The biggest help of all is going to be getting out of the wind as much as possible. And to do that, we are going to need some sort of windscreen. Now for some, they may not approve of this idea, but there is an upside. This could be a seasonal exercise in restyling your bike. I'm not saying you have to go back to full fairing's, but stretch your creativity and maybe try a simple upper fairing. Restyle a factory upper, or make your own. Even a small fly screen can add a little redirection. When it warms back up, you can go back to your original design. At least you survived another cold winter, and maybe… enjoyed it?!
Everyone stay warm out there, and have a safe and happy holidays.

Applying auto loan through online is the most convenient way to procure finances. Information technology has made several task of applying loan easier. Such as:
•Locating lenders offering online auto loan
•Comparing them
•and finally applying for the loan
It is generally seen that the lender also gives priority to online application for approval. The reason is that applying through online involves very low and negligible processing and overhead costs.
For applying online auto loan the person is required to fill an application form in which he is required to furnish certain details such as name, address, flow of income, financial status, credit score, his employment and amount required for financing etc. After furnishing all the details, the lender sees that the applicant fulfils all the criterion of the loan or not. And if he finds an applicant eligible for the loan in such case he sent a loan quote to applicant and approves the loan amount.
Once their amount gets approves, it is automatically transferred to the borrowers account. And, it totally depends on the borrower that how he uses the loan amount in other words whether he can go for used automobile or new automobile. When the borrower gets the loan amount, along with the finances, an obligation is also attached with it. That is, the borrower is obliged to make all the timely repayments. And, anyhow if he fails to do so, in such case the lender can take legal action in order to realise his part of payment.
People with poor credit score are generally denied for the auto loan in the financial market but now they can also avail online auto loan despite of their bad credit. It is possible that they will be offered with bit high rate of interest but by availing online auto loan, they can improve their credit score by making timely payments.
As said that online is the convenient way of applying auto loan but it is also known for its cost effectiveness as very low cost is involved in it. There are certain factors which make the cost of online auto loans more competitive. Some of them factors are:
•collateral being offered
•good credit score
•co-signer( if the person have bad credit score)
If the person consider, these above points while availing online auto loan definitely the best and cheap deal will come to his way.

Ok I Know what half of you are saying. "JGW, this is late, why are you talking about this now?" And I know what the other half of you are saying. "WHAT IN TARNATION JGW. Do you watch this rubbish? I can't read this anymore."

Baby don't be like that. I'll make it up to you, promise. Seriously though, keep reading.

The title really says it all. You're nobody until you're talked about. Initial plot? The beautiful Blair Waldorf is the toast of the adolescent population of Manhattan's Upper East Side, envied by her friends and the adversary of many fellow rich girls. Her ideal world begins to collapse, however, when her ex-best friend, freshly excluded from her previous boarding school, enrolls at Blair's private school.
It gets better from there. And the plot thickens. It gets more complex.

Yes I Watch Gossip Girl. Because it's a good show. and I won't take that back. Unless of course, it gets bad in the second season. But the first season was glamorous. It's really a glamorous show of beautiful people. If you REALLY think about the plot it's kind of ridiculous, so it's better watch things unfold and get caught up in the drama. There isn't really an overarching plot, but following the lives of Manhattan's rich and elite is fun. The dialogue is witty, and there's never a dull moment because something happens EVERY episode. And really it deals with problems everyone has, you know, like your boyfriend ditching you when you are about to take your private helicopter to the Hamptons, or your best from from your dark past coming to try and steal your current boyfriend, or that girl you used to like coming back to steal you from your current girlfriend.

...

Of course some bits are unrealistic. These are high school students but they NEVER EVER have homework. and if there's school, it's like 5 minutes a day. And the poorest kid on the show lives in a penthouse apartment in the hip neighborhood in Brooklyn. OoOo so poor. Again you just have to have a suspension of belief, ignore all the ludicrousness, and just follow the drama at face value. That's when you get addicted. There are 6 different characters for you to love/hate. Even their rich parents have problems! Did I mention that everything sparkles in this show?

If nothing else it has a decent soundtrack. Indie music made by the sad upper middle class kid. Go Watch it. Mondays at 8 on the CW. New Season this Fall.

Ovechkin MVP Harness Available on NHL.com

the ESPY for best NHL player on Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby after a season where Washington Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin simply dominated the entire league, I feel compelled to comment. It's only been a few weeks since Ovechkin cleaned up at the NHL Awards, going home with the Hart Trophy as the regular season's most valuable player; the Lester Pearson Trophy for most outstanding player as voted by the league's players; the Art Ross Trophy for most total points; and the Maurice Richard Trophy as the league's leading goal scorer.

When you clean up like that, I like to think that Ovechkin won't miss an ESPY.

But really, it's worse than that, isn't it? After all, Crosby, who was injured for a good chunk of the season, might not have even been the best player on his team during the regular season. That honor would go to Evgeni Malkin, the man who carried the Penguins offensively in Crosby's absence, and earned himself consideration for both the Hart and Pearson all on his own. As for the playoffs, while Crosby led his team in scoring, it was Marian Hossa who stole the show, scoring 12 playoff goals compared to Crosby's six.

In the end, I can't help but think this vote is an incredible indictment of the way ESPN covers all sports, not just the NHL. After all, if you can't figure out who the best athletes in the world really are after watching countless hours of SportsCenter and digesting endless amounts of content online at ESPN.com, it's pretty clear ESPN is falling down on the job. Then again, I'm not the first person to make note of that. It's clear I won't be the last either.

Latin house is an electronic dance music subgenre that mixes together house and Latin American music, such as that of Brazilian, Cuban and Colombian origin.
In the second half of the 1980s, some the pioneers of house music of Latin-American descent gave birth to this genre by releasing house records in Spanish. Early examples include Amor puertoriqueño by Raz on DJ International and Break 4 Love by Raze. However, the undisputed queen without a crown was the American-Puerto Rican singer Liz Torres, who released Spanish versions of her songs t Get Enough, s Boy and Payback Is A Bitch.
In the 1990s a new generation of producers and labels broke into the market. Nervous Records releases Quiero Saber by the Latin Kings, produced by the Masters at Work. Other interesting records on this label are by Shades of Sound, s All Right by Arts of Rhythm and Philly The Blunt by Trinidad. Strictly Rhythm employs producer Armand van Helden, who released Pirates of The Caribbean Vol. III. Songs from the same label include DJ Deros , The Tribes , R.A.W.s produced by Erick Morillo, Rare Arts Boricua Posse, Escandalos Mas Buena and Fiascos Las Mujeres produced by Norty Cotto, Latin Kaos El Bandolero and Muevete Mama and Sugar Cane by Afro-Cube.
During the same period (1991 -1992) Chicago native Pizarro produced The Five Tones, New Perspective EP, , and . Other producers like Ralphie Rosario and the Masters at Work created Latin house classics, for instance Ralphies production and his remix of Albitas No se parece a nada as well as Sul Chu Cha by Rosabel, while Louie Vega and Kenny Gonzales remix Sume Sigh Say by House of Gypsies (Todd Terry), and a remarkable Latin house hit Robbie Robs Boriqua Anthem by CC Music Factory.
In the meantime hybrid experiments are put on the market by the likes of New Yorks Proyecto Uno, who combined house and merengue in their LPs Todo el mundo and In Da House. Their female counterpart is Lisa M from Puerto Rico, who can be heard on the No lo derrumbes and Flavor of the Latin albums. Another merengue-house record worth of mention is Así mamacita by Henry Rivera on Los Angeles Aqua Boogie. Duo Sandy Papo are known for their LPs Sandy Papo and Otra Vez.
During the mid-1990s Cutting broke into the Latin house scene and became the most representative label of this genre. Serious off-road enthusiasts are modern day explorers and adventurers that want to go where no one has ever gone before. They are usually off exploring those caves or driving up that mountain to see how far they can go. To meet these challenges the typical serious off-road Jeeper wants to enhance their Jeep by adding aftermarket performance parts that help them achieve the optimum rock-crawling, trail-thrashing ability.

With so many ATVs out there designed for different purposes deciding which one is right for you can be tough. This guide will help you determine what type of ATV will be most suitable. It then goes on to explore what to look for in a used ATV to help you make the right buying decision.

It never ceases to surprise me how many ATV owners do little research before visiting a dealer or buying an ATV for sale online. Are they mad? A little research will ensure you don't make the same mistake and enable you to get the machine that best fits your needs, abilities and budget. The more research undertaken the happier you will be with your purchase. More times than I care to remmember I have made a purchase only to find a couple of weeks later a product that would have suited my needs much better. You simply can't afford to let that happen with an expensive product like an ATV or Four Wheeler.

The first thing to consider is your budget. How much can you afford to spend on your ATV? If you haven't previously owned one don't forget to make an allowance for the ancillary equipment that you'll need e.g. helmet, boots and gloves etc and a proper training course. Your budget will determine whether you should buy new or used although my preference would always be a used ATV as there are plenty of great deals available ATVs available and you don't take such a hit on vehicle depreciation.

The next most important consideration is the intended use of the ATV. You are unlikely to want a 4 stroke 4x4 if you are looking for a machine that is suitable for racing. Likewise you won't want a 2 stroke lightweight racing machine for towing things around the farm. This might sound obvious and it is obvious but I've lost count of the number of times I've seen machines bought that did not meet the owners requirements (especially online purchases).

So for towing and farm work check out 4x4 machines. These are the most expensive new so a used atv can save a couple of thousand dollars but remember to use the checklist below to make sure everything is in order before you buy. In my opinion Arctic Cat make some of the best 4x4 machines.

If its a speed machine that your looking for you'll want to be looking at Yamaha and Kawasaki who produce some awesome models that balance power and speed with good handling.

There is also a need to take account of your local riding conditions. Where do you intend to ride your ATV? If you don't know check out the local trails and see what sort of machines your fellow riders are using. Get their opinions. An interesting all round machine that suits quite a few different environments is the Polaris 400 4x4 which has a 2 stroke engine (very unusual in a 4x4). A great all round ATV for most trail blazers. It's biggest limitation is push and pull where a 4 stroke engine definitely has an edge due to it's greater torque.

What riding experience do you have? Make sure that the machine you buy matches your experience. If you've never ridden an ATV before please book yourself on a proper and extensive training course. It's a great investment and will help you get the most from yourself and your machine.

As I have expressed a preference for used ATV I thought it would be helpful to put together a check list of things to look out for and check with the owner before you buy.

Start by checking there is a full service history. Don't even go near a machine without a service history - you've been warned.

Electrics - check or ask if they all work and make sure there are no shorts, removed or damaged accessories.

Wheels - Check/Ask about the condition of rims - damaged rims are a sign that the bike has taken it's share of knocks and bumps.

Bodywork - Check/Ask about damage to bodywork and check things like flaps, instruments and levers.

Rear Axle - Check/Ask if there are leaking seals and the level and condition of the oil. Watery or muddy looking oil is a sign that there is a problem with seals.

Front Axle - Here you want to check/ask if there are loose steering joints, excessive bearing wear or suspension link movement.

Engine - Surprisingly ATV engines don't cause that many problems but watch out for, or ask about, smoking exhausts (sign of worn valves). Clattery noises heard whilst revving can point towards a worn camshaft or drive. Again notice the condition of the oil. If it is dark and thick it has not been changed with sufficient regularity.

Who owns it? ATVs are stolen all the time so always examine the engine and chassis number and check that no financing is in place by doing an online check. This can uncover if a used atv is stolen, accident damaged, had a registration transfer or has outstanding finance.

Follow these simple guidelines and you will greatly reduce the risks of choosing the wrong used ATV for you needs and avoid buying a pup.

Many people are placing a large amount of importance on the type of shoes that they buy in this day and age. At one stage, many years ago, shoes were only worn as a way of protecting your feet. However in this day and age they more often than not worn to make a statement. Increasingly, they have become a very important part of any womans wardrobe and the shoes a woman wears with a particular outfit can either make it or break it. Over the last few years designer shoes for women have become all the rage and although the initial outlay can be expensive they are worth it in the end.
For many women the answer as to whether it is worth spending such a large sum of money on one item will be either yes, no or maybe. But you must remember that designer shoes can cost hundreds and may be sometimes thousands of dollars to buy, and the way in which a woman answers to as to whether they are worth it or not says a lot about her.
For women who say yes it shows that they feel that spending extra on a pair of shoes is worth every cent and it also means that they feel style and fashion are high on their list of priorities.
However those women that decide maybe to the question posed then they will probably only look at buying a pair for a special occasion and that she is willing to pay the price for a one off purchase. But this does not mean that they agree with the prices that are charged (which at times can be exorbitant) it just means that they would on a special occasion pay the price.
But those who say no really do mean that they are very conscious of what they spend on their shoes and are really after value for money over style and being part of the latest fashion craze.
It is hard to believe but the majority of women who were asked this question fell into the no category as they really do not believe and really believe that the price being charged for designer shoes is not worth what you will get.
Although most designer shoes are beautiful to look at, there is also quite a bit of prestige associated with wearing a pair of shoes that have been produced by one of the many famous design houses around the world. Certainly when a woman is wearing a pair of designer shoes, other women and just as many men will sit up and take notice of them. But that is really all a pair of designer shoes are worth where value is concerned.
When looking at purchasing a pair of shoes most women are looking for shoes that will last and unfortunately a lot of designer shoes are not designed to be durable as their construction is not sturdy. Just imagine how you would feel that the $500 pair of shoes you brought a week ago and as you walk down the street the strap or heel breaks on them. You would feel even worse if the $1,200 pair you brought the sole begins to disintegrate after you take a walk in them in light rain.
It is quite simple that most women in this day and age are not willing to spend that sort of money on one pair of shoes, no matter whose name happens to be on them.
When purchasing a pair of designer shoes need to think about what sort of protection they will offer your feet. Unfortunately most designer shoes do not offer this and it seems that the less shoe there is the higher the price you are likely to pay for them. If you look at some of the designer shoes available at the moment, you would wonder how they would stay on your feet and just how much little protection they offer you. In fact some of the designs available today not only offer your feet no protection, but they could be dangerous to wear.
Another issue you have to consider with designer shoes is whether they are comfortable or not. Unfortunately in the fashion world comfort has never played a major role and in most cases you will find the shoes to be extremely uncomfortable to wear. They really offer any support to your feet unless they happen to be designer sneakers (and they would not look good when going out at night with that snazzy little number you are wearing). A lot of models have ruined their feet because they have had to wear designer shoes over a period of time.
But as each woman has their own unique style and different priorities from others, then designer shoes for these women are well worth the money spent. These are the type of women who can easily afford the extravagance of such items and are very interested in the latest fashion trends which have been designed by the top fashion designers.
But what many people do not realize is that though these women are in the minority, the rest would only dream of spending no more than $100 on a good pair of shoes, whilst others would only consider up to $50, you may even find some that would only spend as much as $25 on a pair of shoes.
So think long and hard about when and why you want to spend a large sum of money on a pair of designer shoes before buying them.
Allison Thompson, who has an invested a large amount of money in shoes and boots over the years and decided to build a site dedicated to designer shoes for all the women out there. If you would like to know more than please visit www.shoes.whatshewants.info http://www.shoes.whatshewants.info .

Yankee manager Joe Girardi has lived down to my expectations: no more imagination than any other MLB manager. In yesterday's Yankee loss (15-6 ouch!) to the Mets (double ouch!!) Girardi had a chance to follow my guidelines for doing something DIFFERENT from what all the other BORING MLB managers would do: use his best relief pitcher to save the game, not by facing an arbitrary set of batters in the ninth inning, IF his team was leading, but by using him in the middle of the game.

The Yankee starter, Dan Giese, was through at least one batter before Girardi finally relieved him with the Yankees LEADING 4-3 in the fifth with the bases loaded, no outs and the Mets best batters, Beltran and Delgado (set a Met team record with nine RBI) coming up. That's a save situation. It certainly calls for your best relief pitcher. For the Yankees he is Mariano Rivera. Girardi brought in Edwar Ramirez, who immediately allowed all three inherited runners to score. Mets took a 6-4 lead and then broke it open with five in the sixth inning. Girardi was waiting until the ninth inning to use Rivera. This was such an obvious occasion to break with the conventional tactics but it apparently never even crossed Girardi's mind.

Keeping the game close might have put more pressure on the Met relief pitchers and given the Yankees a chance to battle back. Instead Girardi wasted a golden opportunity to distinguish himself.

Album Review

When Coldplay sampled Kraftwerk on their third album, XY, it was a signifier for the British band, telegraphing their classicist good taste while signaling how they prefer the eternally hip to the truly adventurous; it was stylish window dressing for soft arena rock.

Hiring Brian Eno to produce the bulk of their fourth album, Viva la Vida, is another matter entirely. Eno pushes them, not necessarily to experiment but rather to focus and refine, to not leave their comfort zone but to find some tremulous discomfort within it.
In his hands, this most staid of bands looks to shake things up, albeit politely, but such good manners are so inherent to Coldplay's DNA that they remain courteous even when they experiment.

With his big-budget production, Eno has a knack for amplifying an artist's personality, as he allows bands to be just as risky as they want to be -- which is quite a lot in the case of U2 and James and even Paul Simon, but not quite so much with Coldplay. And yet this gentle encouragement -- he's almost a kindly uncle giving his nephews permission to rummage through his study -- pays great dividends for Coldplay, as it winds up changing the specifics without altering the core. They wind up with the same self-styled grandiosity; they've just found a more interesting way to get to the same point.

Gone are Chris Martin's piano recitals and gone are the washes of meticulously majestic guitar, replaced by orchestrations of sound, sometimes literally consisting of strings but usually a tapestry of synthesizers, percussion, organs, electronics, and guitars that avoid playing riffs.
Gone too are simpering schoolboy ballads like "Fix You," and along with them the soaring melodies designed to fill arenas.

In fact, there are no insistent hooks to be found anywhere on Viva la Vida, and there are no clear singles in this collection of insinuatingly ingratiating songs. This reliance on elliptical melodies isn't off-putting -- alienation is alien to Coldplay -- and this is where Eno's guidance pays off, as he helps sculpt Viva la Vida to work as a musical whole, where there are long stretches of instrumentals and where only "Strawberry Swing," with its light, gently infectious melody and insistent rhythmic pulse, breaks from the album's appealingly meditative murk.

Whatever iciness there is to the sound of Viva la Vida is warmed by Martin's voice, but the music is by design an heir to the earnest British art rock of '80s Peter Gabriel and U2 -- arty enough to convey sober intelligence without seeming snobby, the kind of album that deserves to take its title from Frida Kahlo and album art from Eugene Delacroix. That Delacroix painting depicts the French Revolution, so it does fit that Martin tones down his relentless self-obsession -- the songs aren't heavy on lyrics and some are shockingly written in character -- which is a development as welcome as the expanded sonic palette.

Martin's refined writing topics may be outpaced by the band's guided adventure, but they're both indicative that Coldplay are desperate to not just strive for the title of great band -- a title they seem to believe that they're to the manor born -- but to actually burrow into the explorative work of creating music.

And so the greatest thing Coldplay may have learned from Eno is his work ethic, as they demonstrate a focused concentration throughout this tight album -- it's only 47 minutes yet covers more ground than XY and arguably A Rush of Blood to the Head -- that turns Viva la Vida into something quietly satisfying.
