Basketball Coaching: Team Motivation

Some of us will come home from practices and wonder, “Why on earth did Johnny decide to come out for the basketball team if he doesn’t want to try?” We spend so much time and energy on the frustration and the struggle to get players to perform at their optimum level during games.
I think it can be summed up in one common sports phrase:
“The way you practice is the way you play the game.”
Too many of our players don’t take practices seriously and they are joking around and not focusing on the task at hand. They don’t pay attention in practice and it is reflected in the way they play on the field, court, or arena. What makes the problem even worse is the fact that these players often have a detrimental effect on the attitude and coachability of others.
So, how do you motivate all of the players on the basketball team to start practicing hard? First, accept that you will always have at least one bad apple. The key is limiting the amount of influence that player can have on the rest of his or her basketball teammates.
Here are some of the other methods you can use to get your basketball team motivated to practice hard and play hard:
• Reward the basketball team for ‘basketball team’ efforts – Often times peers are the best motivators. You don’t need to crack the whip on any particular player, singling that player out more than the rest. You simply need to motivate the majority of the basketball team by rewarding them when the entire basketball team comes out to work hard during practices and games.
If their basketball teammates don’t want to work and the rest of the basketball team misses out on rewards, or worse yet have to do more work at practice, you can bet that person is going to hear it from the players. I would suggest that will often be motivation enough to get most players in line with practicing hard.
• Set a goal with the basketball team before each game – In hockey, you could set a goal of each basketball team member making a good pass in each period. If the basketball team achieves that goal then they are rewarded.
The goal can be as simple as winning a game, or doing a number of different basketball team skills effectively – even in a loss. As the coach, you can find any number of goals that a basketball team can try to reach during a game or even a practice, in order to motivate the players.
• Explain to them the importance of practice – You can use all sorts of coaching tactics for this one. Start with the fact that other basketball teams are preparing for them, so they need to prepare hard and well for the other basketball teams. You can tell them that improving skills is crucial in raising the basketball team to the next level.
There are literally dozens of different motivational tactics that can be used by coaches to get their basketball team up by showing them the importance of practice. The only thing that you shouldn’t do is be negative. Always be positive with the approach that you are taking. Players don’t often respond to negative remarks.
• Have fun at practice – Set the example early that practices are going to be work, but they are also going to be fun. That way a player knows that they are going to be able to have fun during the practice, but they will also be able to have fun.
This is especially important for the younger players. At that level, you are trying to maintain excitement and enjoyment for players that are probably just learning a game. If they see and hear a coach that is negative and yelling and the practices aren’t fun, then you probably aren’t going to see them for much longer. If they stay, you likely aren’t going to get much out of them.
• Simple encouragement – You wouldn’t believe how far positive encouragement and telling a player when they are doing well goes. It is unbelievable. Just think back to when you were a player in your sport and you heard your coach say, “That was a great steal Joe,” or “how to get the ball out quick Jenny.”
All of those comments help. They help a heck of a lot more than degrading or getting angry at players. No one wants to work hard for a coach that yells at his or her players during a practice or during a game. Players like coaches that lead them to victory through positive reinforcement, good coaching and setting a good example.
It isn’t always easy getting a basketball team motivated for practices, but that is the place to start – especially if you also want to get them motivated for games. Helping to build that motivation by giving players and the basketball team some positive goals to work for – with a positive coaching mentality is the best way to get the most motivation out of your basketball team.

Remember Tebow was a tight end and linebacker until just before he entered High School.
Now even some of the are re-examining the Quarterback position and looking how playing 11 on 11 football may be the wave of the future. The next time someone asks you what kind of offense you are running, tell them its something like what Florida Runs or something like the Wild Hog series that Arkansas uses and has so much success with. From the time we bring them home as wriggling bundles of joy, we all want our puppies to live forever. As they bond with us and grow into full fledged family members, we tend not to think about the end of their life or how many precious years we have with our canine friends.

However, when picking out our new puppy it is rare that we give adequate consideration to the average lifespan of the dog. There are distinct factors that play into whether our puppy will be with us until our children graduate from high school or if they give us a few good years.

Most experts agree that small breeds tend to outlive large breeds. The general rule of thumb is the larger the dog the shorter the life span. Large medium to large breed dog tend to live about ten years, although there are exceptions to every rule. We have a feisty-willed large breed mutt who is determined to see his fifteenth birthday.

Smaller breeds tend to live longer, anywhere from twelve to fifteen years. Occasionally you will run into the nearly twenty year old Scottie, but most dont make it past their sixteenth year.

Again, every rule has its exceptions. The Irish Wolfhound isnt expected to make it more than six or seven good years although there really isnt a conclusive reason as to why this is so. Of course these figures are taking into consideration overall good health and quality care. Genetics play a vital role in longetivity, but those we cant control. There are a few factors in our favorite little guys life we can do to help him get to his ripe old age. Some of them can even combat predisposition to genetic diseases.

One of the fastest ways to shorten a dogs life is to keep him outside all the time. Dogs that live outside tend to be missing a few key ingredients in their overall care that impact their life span.

Even with a shelter available, dogs do wear down and age quickly when they are dealing with constant element exposure. While some can adjust, most dog bodies find the extremes the environment can dish out at them to be exhausting and threatening.

Dogs who permanently reside outside tend to receive less over all care. Since people spend the majority of their time at home inside, often small health problems go unnoticed until it becomes an overwhelming problem. Even the responsible pet owner can forget to feed or water the dog who is permanently engaged in outdoor activities when the lifestyle inside the home becomes stressed or busy.

Outdoor dogs also lack the essential strong emotional connection with their owners that indoor dogs benefit from. Having their human friends to please and play with goes a long way in their overall happiness and health. Often a sick dog who has no emotional connection will stop eating and caring for themselves long before those who have families who love and care for them. If you want your little guy to live a longer, fuller life, bring him inside and let him be part of the family lifestyle.

Whether you are bringing home a purebred puppy or a distinguished gentleman of questionable descent, their life span can be about the same. Barring any health problems, each should live as long as the other and it really just comes down to personal preference.

following is the first in a two-part series about Grand Haven golf professional Scott Janus' trip to teach golf in the Kingdom of Bhutan.

Most Americans are quite familiar with Tibet, but ask the same people what they know about the Kingdom of Bhutan and you're likely to get nothing more than a blank stare.

It's not surprising. The Kingdom of Bhutan is a relatively small country roughly a fifth the size of the state of Michigan located just south of Tibet in the eastern Himalayas.

Up until the last quarter century, foreign visitors were not allowed in Bhutan, and even in 2006, just 12,000 tourists were permitted to enter the country for a taste of Bhutan's Buddhist culture.

Nine out of 10 Bhutanese are farmers, and the nation's No. 1 pastime is archery.

All that being said, Bhutan would seem like an odd place for a golf professional to spend nearly six months.

But that's exactly where Scott Janus found himself this past year, hired as the golf coach for the Kingdom of Bhutan.


"My three main tasks were to teach the youth of Thimphu (Bhutan's capital city), to coach the officials of the Indian army, and to implement golf into the schools," said Janus, 30, who now runs the Janus Golf Academy at Grand Haven Golf Club.

Janus, a native of Chicago, interviewed for the position in Bhutan with Rick Lipsey of Sports Illustrated, a member of the Bhutan Youth Golf Association.


After doing some research on his destination, Janus began a voyage across 12 time zones, a trip right out of an Indiana Jones film. He flew from Chicago to Detroit to Tokyo, then from Tokyo to Bangkok, before flying into Thimphu.

"The trip took 28 hours of travel time," Janus said.

"The first thing I noticed was there was a dirt road from the airport to the capital," Janus said. "It took us about three hours. Most of the roads in the country haven't been developed. It was really interesting. Their entire culture is still intact. They still wear native clothing every day. It was very different, living on the other side of the earth. It was a totally different culture. It was exciting to see a country that just got television in 1995 and the Internet in 2002."

Janus spent a majority of his stay in Thimphu, where he lived in a modern apartment building, complete with electricity and running water. The apartment complex housed guests of the nation who were experts in various fields, from the arts to professional trades.

Another resident of the complex was Ugen Tshering. Throughout most of its history, Bhutan's government has been run by a monarchy, but during Janus' stay, the king gave up the power of his position in favor of a democratic government, and Tshering won the first public election ever held in the country.

"It's the first peaceful transition from a monarchy to a democracy in the history of democracy," Janus said. "The king gave up his power to the people. He gave up his rule in the favor of a democracy."

Visitors to Bhutan are typically kept under strict watch. Visa fees are among the highest in the world at $200 per day, and tourists can only stay for 14 days. To stay longer, you must be invited by the royal family. Since Janus' stay was by invitation, he was free to come and go as he pleased during his time in Thimphu.

While Michigan is home to hundreds of golf courses, the entire Kingdom of Bhutan features just seven golf courses, mostly of the nine-hole variety.

"There are three in the capital, one in Ha, and the remaining courses were built and are owned by the Indian army," Janus said. "Most of them are in pretty good condition. I'd say there are three championship courses."

Janus said the popularity of the game of golf is growing rapidly across Asia, especially in India and China, where the number of golf courses has risen dramatically over the past decade.

The Indian army occupies Bhutan as peace keepers and defenders of the nation. The officers in the Indian army are golf fanatics, and part of Janus' duty in Bhutan was to help sharpen the game of these officers.

"Golf is just exploding in Asia," Janus said. "China had five golf courses in 2002, and now there are over 380. In Thailand and India, it's just erupting. It's by far the fastest-growing sport in Asia. It's all because of Tiger Woods.

"Golf is intertwined into the Indian army. The Indian embassy housed a nine-hole course. They were very passionate and very grateful to have a professional coach.

"They took full advantage of it. I had a full military transport to the embassy."

But teaching golf to Indian military officials didn't have nearly the effect on Janus as teaching the game to the children of Bhutan.

Ive never been a fan of the Diamondbacks uniforms, which look to me a boring copy of the boring modern Astros unis. Yet, I thought it rather cool that Tony Penas red glove matched his red uniform.


Those poor, poor D-backs
The Arizona Diamondbacks, who held the best record in baseball well into May, have lost a whole heck of a lot of games to fall to .500. On May 18, they were 28-16; since then, within their 14-26 record, theyve had six streaks where theyve lost at least three in a row.

Whenever a team nosedives like this, one seeks to assign blame. Start with the comparison of offense and defense has the pitching blown up since May? Have Arizonas pitchers stunk? Or both?

As comparison for the following, note that the league average OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage) is .737.

Until May 18, the Diamondbacks collective OPS was .789, while their pitchers were allowing D-backs opponents a .670 OPS. Not bad, eh?

Since May 20, the pitchers have regressed to league average, allowing a .736 OPS against. However, the batters have regressed to well below league average, to .670. Wow.

So its pretty clear: While the D-backs pitching is not as awesome as it was early in the year, its the bats that have truly gone quiet.


And on top of that, here are the D-backs injury problems
Pitcher Micah Owings missed a start with a sore back. Eric Byrnes is out for a while, according to manager Bob Melvin, with a hamstring issue. And, most disgustingly, catcher Chris Snyder is on the 15 day DL with guys, you may want to skip this part a fractured testicle. He took a pitch to the cup, stayed in the game for a couple of innings, but now has undergone surgery. Ugh.


The usefulness of the compensation pick
I heard some good analysis on MASN2 Monday night about Florida pitcher Ryan Tucker. He was acquired by the Marlins using a compensation pick in the draft. Whats a compensation pick, you ask? When a player leaves a team via free agency, his new team must give the old team a draft pick as

Commentators often note that a player is in the last year of his contract and unlikely to sign with his team the next year. The conclusion seems to be, trade the player during that last year before free agency, salvaging whatever value the team can, rather than get when the player leaves. However, I have never head a commentator even mention the existence of compensatory picks in this analysis. Sure, a draft pick takes many years to mature. But, if a free-agent-to-bes trade value is depressed due to his contract situation, a team might as well let the guy sign elsewhere, and take the draft pick.

That said, this compensatory pick is still a work in progress. Mr. Tucker went deep into seemingly every count sometimes because people fouled pitches off repeatedly, more often because he couldnt throw strikes. MASN2 announcers noticed that his fastball looked softer as the innings progressed. In the 5th inning especially, Mr. Tucker looked beat. He got two outs, on 6- and 7- pitch at bats. Then he gave up three straight singles, on 7-, 6-, and 2- pitch at bats. But, the pitcher was coming up, offering a way out.

Mr. Tucker threw a fastball for a strike, and then TWO STRAIGHT CHANGEUPS, both out of the strike zone.

I mean, its generally a dumb idea to throw a changeup to a pitcher, anyway the purpose of a changeup is to fool a hitter who has the fastball timed. But a pitcher, who hardly ever comes to the plate, isnt likely to be prepared to crush the fastball. More likely, the changeup might as well be a slowball, giving the pitcher a chance to catch up to pitch speeds that he saw back in high school.

In this situation especially, why putz around with the changeup? Mr. Tucker was having enough trouble with control. Just let the guy put the ball in play, and get the heck out of the inning. Those two changeups put the count at 2-1. The next two pitches were nowhere close, and the Nats pitcher jogged to first to load the bases.

Should a reliever always bunt?
On Monday, Marlins relief pitcher Doug Waechter came to bat in the 6th inning of a tie game, probably because the bullpen had been used heavily lately, the starter had gone only 5 innings, and Mr. Waechter had been effective in his first inning of work. When he stepped in, a man was on second base with 1 out. He was asked to sacrifice(!). Why? A pitcher bunts to move a runner from second to third with no one out, setting up the possible sac fly or run-scoring fielders choice. He bunts with a man on first base to avoid the double play. He bunts with a man on third in an attempt to drive the run in. But with a man on second and already 1 out? That does only marginal good a runner is nearly as likely to score from second base with two out as from third. Why not take the chance of the pitcher actually getting a hit?

Bob Carpenter, the Nationals announcer, reached deep to find a possibly logical explanation for manager Fredi Gonzalezs decision: Perhaps the Marlins manager knew that the on-deck batter, Hanley Ramirez, has excellent speed, and was likely to get an infield hit, thus scoring a runner from 3rd. I say its more likely that Mr. Gonzalez had his pitcher bunt because thats what he always does with his pitchers with men on base.


More about pitchers hitting
Are AL pitchers that bad at batting? Or, at least, are AL pitchers necessarily worse hitters than NL pitchers? If we were to listen to commentators, wed believe that American League pitchers, who only hit during interleague play in visiting ballparks, are equivalent to the Nachoman in their hitting ability. Lets investigate that assumption.

NL pitchers this year: .353 OPS, averaging 149 pitcher at bats per team.
AL pitchers: .309 OPS, averaging 19 pitcher at bats per team.

The NL leads the AL in pitchers on base percentage, .180 - .162. What exactly does this mean? In every 50 plate appearances by a pitcher, the NL would be expected by the numbers to get one more baserunner than the AL. Since pitchers usually give way to pinch hitters in late innings, this means about one more baserunner for the NL over about 25 games. Me, Id call this an even proposition.

If you promise to remember that sample sizes are small, and so these stats dont have nearly the same meaning that full-season batting stats do, Ill give you some interesting notes about AL teams pitchers hitting:

* Only the Blue Jays and Red Sox pitchers have failed to get on base even once.

Why Punishment?

A Slippery Slope:
Shock, telling off, shouting at, sanctions, smacking, time out / detention, restraint, confrontation, torture, prison.
People, including children become hardened to punishment. That isnt to say that punishments dont have a place and a purpose in society, including those used with children. And yes smacking children does work as a short term, reactive strategy. What it doesnt do is address the problem or provide a long term solution, it is also likely to potentially lead to further problems with behaviour if misused and is very open to abuse.
The more the punishment is used, the less effective it becomes, as the person gradually builds up a tolerance to it. The next punishment therefore, will need to be more intense for it to have any effect.
Over time then, the behaviour gets more severe and frequent, because the person comes to realise that they have experienced this response before. They coped with it then and it was no big deal (e.g. the deterrent is not as powerful as the motivation of or need for the behaviour). Therefore they assume it will be the same again, ( So what you gonna to do bout it then? ).
As the person becomes older, stronger, bigger and more astute they are more likely to want to gain recompense by using the behaviour then to strike back, maybe including verbal physical aggression.
Weve all seen the scenario at the supermarket checkout queue:
Child: (Walking off) - I want some sweets. Mum: (Already Loud) - Get over ere! . Child: Ignores. Mum: (Louder) - Get ere now! . Child: Ignores smirks. Mum: (Attempting to be a bit calmer) - Get over ere now this is your, last chance! . Child: (Knowing whats coming) - Im looking at these as edging further away. Mum: (Through gritted teeth) - Get here now before I crack ya one . Child: (Knowing hell get crack either way) - I want these . Mum: (Losing it!) - Youre having nothing, NOW GET OVER HERE . Child: (Shouting) - I want them! . Mum: (Yelling) - B Y WELL GET HERE NOW!! .Child: off . Mum: (Forfeiting place in queue, advances and WHACK!) - DONT YOU DARE SHOW ME UP IN PUBLIC . Child: (Crying but winning!) - That hurt you silly cow . Mum: (Returning to queue with firm grip on childs arm) - Just put the soddin sweets in the basket stay over youre havin nothin else!! . Child: (With slight smile through the tears) - Sorry mum . Mum: (To onlooker) - Kids eh .I dont believe hes the way he is with me! .
This may be the only way that they have learned to achieve the function of whatever the behaviour was about in the first place and so to reach that goal they have to go through this cycle. (e.g. mum doesnt like me having sweets, cant afford sweets etc. I know the only way on earth I am going to get the sweets is to go through this cycle). It follows then that the punishments become more severe and frequent and so on. Punishments therefore can lead potentially to abuse (e.g. as the smacking has to become harder to have the same desired effect).
What could mum have been done better with above incident? Probably nothing on this specific occasion, at least not without some . The incident is the outcome of years of inadvertent training and conditioning, leading to their current relationship. With a different relationship, mum might have had more options. A stranger or someone less familiar with the same child, would probably not have had the same problem, at least not initially. As soon as the child realises that this person is starting to respond the same way as mum the behaviour will probably quickly accelerate and end up the same. This might offer some explanation of the honeymoon period theory, that being whereas in a new setting or with a new person, the childs behaviour is much improved for a temporary period of time.
