EXPRESS: What was your take on Dan Duquette? He came across as a humbled general manager compared to the perception in Boston back in late '90s when he was a bit of an egocentric.

RAPKIN: Dan is a huge baseball fan. Played all the way growing up. When he was GM of the Red Sox that was his dream job. If you look at the 2003 team that won the World Series, he built that team to a large degree but wasn't able to watch them finish the job. This was a great opportunity for him to bring baseball to new country, which he helped to do in Canada [with the Expos].

KESTEN: As far as Larry was concerned, Dan was a perfect guy to approach. I don't think Larry expected him to accept the position, but he was humbled. Larry probably got him at the right time. He was out of baseball; he'd been turned down for a couple of GM openings. He opened up to us a lot more than we thought he would given what we heard about him. I think he shows vulnerability. He's one of favorite guys to see on screen. He's either saying something funny or poignant.

EXPRESS: What is the future of movie?

RAPKIN: We only recently finished and it's been seen by only a few people. We've kept it close to vest. From the few people we've shown it to, we've gotten tremendous feedback. BMorg faced a profound choice when dealing with the fall out of Addis seemingly deranged action. They could have understood and capitalized on the PR value by simply, graciously accepting what happened and then making the best of it. They could have been (or claimed to be) compassionate. It might have looked something like this: send Harley or M2, (not the compromised Rogers) to court with receipts for less than $5000.00 and a request for community service for the offender Addis. As you all know, this is NOT what happened. Pity.

An essentially decent (tho undeniably off balance) young mans life and his potential career have been crushed to pay the debt of anger and retribution of a vengeful corporation. He was made an example of in order to insure that NO ONE would ever challenge or desecrate the empty symbol (Oh.. excuse me, the brand trademark) of a corporation that could have been so much more.

Some have brought up the point that the decision whether or not to prosecute an arson case lies with the DA (or in this case the Federal Prosecutor.) Just to be crystal clear here - this is technically correct. However any prosecutor who does not have the tacit support of the aggrieved party in such a case (vandalism, property damage, etc.) will think very hard before dedicating his/her offices limited resources to a case that very likely will not culminate in a conviction. Make no mistake - Black Rock City LLC knew very well that if they declared their financial loss for the early immolation of their corporate logo to be less than $5000.00, the best conviction the prosecutor could have hoped for would have been a misdemeanor rap culminating in a much more appropriate finale for all parties. Any decent group of people that were part of a would have acted with circumspection and compassion in this case.

Now, I would like to commend Chicken John for his passionate arguments regarding this issue and address some misapprehensions and misinterpretations put forward by various individuals in the responses posted on this blog.

Ive heard so many people who became involved in BM in its later years excoriate Chicken and other old timers for sour grapes or living in the past, or simply being stick in the mud types unable or unwilling to allow the newcomers their right to simply enjoy their participation in the event without a lecture about how cool it used to be and how watered down it is now.

I believe that any misunderstanding here is simply one of definition. So, lets define what Burning Man is and what it was. Also, lets put the event into the larger context of the and culture scene of the Bay Area and beyond.

Now, Burning Man (legally speaking, Black Rock City LLC) is a for profit corporation controlled by six people (Marian Goodell, Harley Bierman, Michael Mikel, Larry Harvey, Will Roger Peterson and Crimsom Rose) that generates in excess of 12 million dollars annually for producing a one week event. Much of the labor to produce this event is volunteer or compensated at well below market value for comparable work on comparable events (Oregon County Faire, Coachella, etc.) Burning Man (like Montsanto, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon and Intel Corp) has embraced themes to validate its corporate mission statement and counter balance its corporate on the environment as well as to assuage the conscience and expectations of its target market (you.)

Burning Man (like Starbucks, Apple Computer and Nike) provides a superior product that generates intense consumer adherence and loyalty.

Burning Man (like The Body Shop, Esprit and Ben Jerrys) derives a great deal of its consumer adherence from its very successful PR campaign equating the corporation and its goals with specific ideals. Powerful ideological constructs that connect the consumers with an idealized vision of what the brand can mean as it exerts its sway on the larger world is also crucial to the corporations marketing campaign.

People go to the playa. They spend whatever it takes to be prepared for their individualized experience. They proselytize their friends and acquaintances to join them in their odyssey. They return again and again, adhering to the social order and cultural precepts that preconceived notions of the event and group peer conceptualization demand.

If theyre lucky, they are part of a crew primarily driven by the collective desire and motivation to create singular or experience at the event - either underwritten by the BMorg (with not that much more butt kissing than might be expected from the average arts funding council) or self-financed. All in all the, consumer experience is a very good one and more than worth the cost of admission to a majority of the consumers.

So, as you see, you get what you pay for. In my mind, with the current BM set-up, you probably get your moneys worth.

What BM was:

A radically inspired and thoroughly experimental event created and organized by a loose cabal of nearly penniless artists and pranksters. During the early years of the event in the Black Rock Desert anyone could do anything they wished. The cops came and left soon thereafter because the was not interfering with the property rights of powerful interests. In case you didnt know, the primary job of law enforcement in the USofA is to protect property. Thats much of the reason that I have never had a problem with cops: theyre merely working class guys with a good job. They didnt fuck with us because we chose to put the event as far away from civilization and commerce as humanly possible. Later as the event grew in commercial stature and the various governmental entities saw it for what it was becoming - a cash cow (BM provides most of the operating budget for the Winnemucca office of the BLM and buys various law enforcement agencies a lotta cool toys - helicopters, RV command centers, etc.) It was a trade off that organizations greater and lesser have made as well over the years. Had BM stuck to its original heart and inspiration it would probably have been snuffed out long ago. So it became something that could survive and thrive: a corporation that sells a lifestyle to a target market based on an original theme and spirit that resonates to this day with a tiny portion of the initial essence that drove the bus and forged the myth.

What many newcomers dont realize is that BM isnt a in and of itself; it is merely the most visible and commercial exponent of an actual movement that is much more amorphous and indefinable than a business that sells a lifestyle. BM grew out of a vibrant and completely anarchic underground scene in San Francisco (and other cities across the continent) that has continued to mutate and grow to this day. Artists and pranksters that meet and collaborate through BM move on to form alliances that are of value in order to experiment and create long after their last trip to the Playa. This is the same as it was when I showed up in Frisco at age 17 in 1976 and was immediately sucked into the swirling vortex that was to be my home for the next 32 years. Chicken John and other concerned parties are simply lamenting the fact that an event of such power and purity has inevitably devolved into a commercial endeavor that packages and sells (very nicely and effectively, I must say) a replication of that original spirit of such undeniable value. The heart and soul that birthed BM exists now apart from this commercial entity as they always have. The simple fact that that BM has chosen, essentially to sacrifice one of its own members in order to retain some semblance of owning and controlling that singular spirit is a sure bet that the magic is gone, replaced by a commercial simulacrum of that spirit.

Weighing all accounts of the early burn event that Paul enacted and, delving into my own not small experience (professional rigger, former operations manager for BM) as well as my personal knowledge of Paul Addis as a troubled but pure and sincere soul, I have come to the inevitable conclusion that no one was physically threatened by his masterful prank. Consequently, I am forced to conclude that
CLLC/BM acted egregiously and erroneously by not interceding with the authorities in order to mitigate Pauls punishment for what was in effect a gift to them and their event. Paul Addis is paying the price for speaking truth to power.

But in roughly four seasons as the primary CF for the Royals, DeJesus never improved on his rookie numbers. Not that he was a disaster by any means, he just stayed the same. Heading into this season, it seemed simple enough to pencil DeJesus in for a .280 BA, a handful of homers and steals and close to 100 runs batting in the first slot. Not great, not horrible. Just kind of in between.
That may be changing to some extent. DeJesus is on pace for his best season. He’s on pace to deliver perhaps as many as 20 HR, looks like a good bet to hit .300 and he’s actually turning into what the Royals envisioned from him as he was making his way through the system. About the only area where DeJesus isn’t progressing is on the bases, where he’s still only a 50% base stealer. Apparently, this is something he just doesn’t have the knack for and it’s now doubtful he’ll ever turn into a real threat in that category.
But I like the more aggressive approach DeJesus is otherwise flashing and suspect he could be nice under the radar target in deep fantasy leagues. He’s not likely to be found on any waiver wires, but I don’t think he’d be that tough to obtain, particularly if you can get him included as an extra piece in a multi-player swap. Explore the possibilities.
HARANG GETTING BANGED
Aaron Harang had another poor outing on Thursday. He’s been written up as a great buy low candidate by fantasy analysts at numerous sites, but I’m going to have to stray from that popular viewpoint and play devil’s advocate.
There are lots of things to like about Harang and off his last two seasons, the buy low tag seems applicable. But I’m seeing signs of decline. Without intending to denigrate those who plunge headlong into statistics to arrive at their conclusions, I don’t think there’s anything more revealing that watching a pitcher to determine whether a sudden rise or fall from that individual’s norm is legit or just a fluke.
In Harang’s case, I think those looking at his still impressive BB/K rate and therefore concluding he’s just getting unlucky are not seeing the real story. True enough, Harang is right on pace as far as his walks and strikeouts are concerned. In his last seven appearances, Harang has worked 36.1 IP (one of those outings was a four inning bullpen stint in a marathon game where Cincy ran out of relievers). His BB/K rate in those games is a superb 7/35. But he’s also given up an alarming 56 hits in that span. And he’s also allowed 27 earned runs in that stretch, which is pretty awful.
I’m not seeing the same Aaron Harang I’ve see the last two seasons. He’s down the middle on way to many pitches. So while his control is as good as ever, his command clearly is not as he’s wild in the strike zone. The velocity is okay, so he’s still going to get his swings and misses, thus the K rate is being maintained. But unless he can once again start hitting the corners or better yet, start getting hitters to flail at pitches out of the strike zone, continued trouble looms for Harang.
From a fantasy standpoint, if you own Harang, you have to keep him and hope for the best. But if you’re not saddled with him, I wouldn’t be actively pursuing him. Buying low is a great philosophy if there’s a big spike possibly forthcoming, but in Harang’s case I’m just seeing that as a real likelihood right now.
FELIPE LOPEZ SIGHTING
Turn back the clock to 2005, and Felipe Lopez was one hot commodity. The numbers were almost staggering. .291/97/23/85/15 made him a prized middle infielder and he was a popular early selection in ‘06 drafts. While there was some decrease that season, Lopez still maintained big value thanks to 44 steals. Last season Lopez fell off in all categories, and even his 24 SB couldn’t prevent him from getting cast to the scrap heap in many leagues.
Lopez has had only negative value this season. He’s not hitting for average, there’s no power and he’s only got four steals. Plus, he’s hitting seventh on a bad Washington offense. So how come I’m writing about Felipe Lopez today? Well, there are some signs of life all of a sudden. Lopez homered Thursday and now owns a ten-game hitting streak.
I wouldn’t race to the free agent pool to obtain Lopez just yet unless you’re lucky enough to have room for a speculative pickup that you don’t have to play every day. Personally, I just picked him up in my 15-team mixed league, but all I had to give up was Yuniesky Betancourt and his totally empty .280 BA. It’s a nothing to lose proposition for me, and I happen to have a big enough lead in that league to go ahead and take some end of the roster shots.
But I would definitely start monitoring Lopez to see if the steals begin to reappear. If they do, he’s a decent target, especially with 2B/SS/OF eligibility.

Golf Swing Step By Step.
Learning how to master your backswing can take years of skilled practice. Your goal is to get one fluid motion of grace and finesse. From the start of your backswing, through impact, to the follow through, it should be one fluid motion.
A. Why It Matters
The backswing is the initial movement of your golf club. It defines everything that follows. Therefore, its critical to get it right!
B. The Takeaway
Once you are set up and in position to prepare for your shot, begin the backswing by moving your club slowly backwards. Keep the clubhead as close to the ground as possible.
Dont move the club too fast as this may create a steep swing plane which can reduce your power accuracy. And, be sure that your left shoulder is slightly higher than your right one (assuming you are right-handed). Your shoulders, arms, and hips should all move together in one fluid motion.
Golf players that concentrate just on their arms hands have a tough time learning how to hit with power consistently.
You must learn to coordinate all of your body parts to move as one. The key is not to think too muchand thats tougher than you might think!
Simply turn feel your arms, shoulders, and upper legs all moving together in synchronicity. Just go with the flow.
C. As You Turn
Once your backswing is in motion, your body will start its turn and your right arm should begin to fold inside. Your left arm should not be stiff, it should remain somewhat straight. Your right elbow should remain tight to your body throughout the entire backswing.
At this point, everything should be turning naturally and your weight will begin to shift.
Once your club shaft is in the air and pointing straight back, your wrists should begin to bend naturally. Dont tighten your grip. Keep it loose and casual.yet, in control at all times.
Keep turning everything gracefully until your left shoulder is underneath your chin. Your left knee will start to bend toward the right one. The club should now be in the air positioned on top of your head. You are now ready for the downswing.
D.The Top Of Your Swing
OK. Try to avoid swinging your body at this point. Your club should be in the air pointing towards your target line. The majority of your weight should be on your right foot, and your left knee should be bent slightly inward.
Your right knee will have a slight bend throughout the entire backswing because it serves to brace your bodys power.
(Your left foot may rise slightly at the top of your backswing, but try to keep that to a minimum as it may affect your accuracy. Its better to keep your left foot grounded, if possible.)
E. Everything In Place
The moment of contact is almost here. You should feel a tremendous quantity of energy and power building up, rolled tightly in your bodyjust waiting to release and send the ball flying.
You should feel confident. The shoulders should be at 90 degrees your hips should be turned to approximately 45 degrees. (These angles are not set in stone, but they are good guidelines. Every player has different levels of flexibility and technique.)
Strive to practice your backswing as often as possible. You dont need to be at the driving range or on a golf course to do so. Every chance you get, simply stand in front of a mirror to see yourself follow through with the proper technique. Get a friend to check out your backswing for constructive criticism. They can alert you to any tweaks that need to be made.
F. Coming Down
Now you are ready to drive the ball far down the fairway.
Your backswing should have felt controlled smooth. But, you will now feel a change in tempo. You will release the downswing with full power. Make sure its graceful easy at the same time.
The switch should appear as graceful and as seamless as possible. The best swings show no sign of using a snapping motion or force.
Unfortunately, this is where many beginner and amateur golfers divert from the pros. Their backswing was initiated perfectly, but their transition is sabotaged by a poor downswing.
G. Start From The Hips
The hips should be the very first body parts to move when bringing the club down. In fact, your entire body is getting ready to uncoil itself starting from the hips. Dont pay too much attention to your arms and hands. They will be the last body parts to turn should do so naturally.
Once your body starts to uncoil, be sure that your weight begins to shift from your right foot to your left.
This part is crucial!
If you dont shift your weight onto your left foot, you may lose nearly 1/2 of the power and accuracy needed to make a successful shot. At first, you may need to concentrate on shifting your weight.
But, after enough practice, your body should complete the weight distribution naturally. Repetition is key.
H. Uncoil The Body Release The Energy
When it comes to arms hands. strive to maintain the natural bend you have in your wrists for as long as possible. They should be the last part of your body to release before hitting the ball.
If you can snap your wrists at the very last moment, youll undoubtedly transfer more power and strength to the ball. This will drive it longer consistently.
The clubhead should now be coming down and moving faster towards the ball. Good form is essential. As the downswing gains momentum and speed, your entire body should follow through automatically, without interference.
Once the clubhead approaches the ball, you should feel like you are cracking a whip.
I. Lets Do It
Congratulations, your swing is almost there.
Weve come so far!
Its now time to make contact with the ball follow through. Just do it.
The contact you make with the ball and the direction (and loft) that it takes is determined here. If you are going for a straight shot, then the clubhead must move directly within the target line. If you want your ball to go left, then the path of the clubhead should point left, and vice versa, for the right.
Now, at first, its not that easy to learn how to correctly steer your clubhead in relation to where you want the ball to go. This takes thousands of shots to master.
Your downswing will ultimately release power into the ball. The hands and forearms should rotate slightly counterclockwise (for right-handed golfers).
The clubhead then rotates toward the ball until its close to perpendicular to your target line
J. The Follow Through
Every swing results in a follow through. This describes what your club body does after making impact with the ball.
Although the ball is well on its way flying through the air, you still need to rotate your body club in a smooth and graceful fashion.
Once your swing is done, your hips should be turned just enough so that your stomach area faces the target. Most of your weight should be transferred to the left foot and your right foot should be on its toes. Your back should be somewhat straight and the club wrapped around the back of your shoulders.
Here are some more tips a few points that need repeating
* Be sure that your head is centered over the ball as much as possible (You may allow a small amount of lateral motion if needed),
* The left arm should remain straight throughout the entire backswing. However, a small amount of bending is acceptable.
* Your left shoulder should be tucked snug underneath your chin.
* Your right arm should be folded smoothly into your side and brush across the rib cage.
* Your right knee should always maintain its bend throughout the backswing.
* Your body weight should shift considerably to the right foot when turning behind the ball.
K. Last Minute Tip
Once your body has stopped moving and your follow through is complete, practice remaining in that position for a few seconds after each shot. Not only can you watch the flight path of the ball, but if your body remains still without tilting over, its a good sign that you maintained perfect balance coordination with the shot.
