We went out last night to celebrate my husbands 34th year of life. Before we went out, Dave had an hour long massage. We were all picking on him and his 'massage high'. We went to this German bar called the Haufbrahaus in Newport. It was so much fun. We had yummy pretzels with bier cheese and lots of yummy beer in Giant really heavy mugs. We had great friends there with us and a polka band. It was great. Two of our other friends were celebrating birthdays in a week so all the birthday boys had a shot of Jagermeister to commemorate the event. One of our friends footed the bill for the whole thing which was so unexpected and amazing. That was so generous. It was fun! (but i forgot my camera-bummer)
Now tonight Dave and I get to go to the Bengals/Saints game. I cant wait. It will be so fun and we have club seats. A friend has season tickets but has a fantasy draft tonight so we get to enjoy his tickets. Yay!
Pictures to come soon.

Yep, another one of those "Other Things." I'll come back with some baseball stuff later.

This weekend at my neighborhood theatre is one of my favorite events to experience, and something I think everyone should do at some point or another: the Rocky Horror Picture Show. I went last night amidst a huge crowd, and as usual the showgoers ranged from regular jeans-and-tees folks to hardcore RHPS devotees in elaborate costume and makeup. (Admittedly, I do not have the confidence or the right type of wardrobe to be the latter, so I show up as the former.)

But something was very different about last night's showing...they had rules! It seems so contrary to enforce strict rules for RHPS, but sure enough the Dundee did not allow the usual props like rice, squirt guns, toast, toilet paper, etc. I understand that it's the biggest pain in the ass of the year (or a lifetime) to clean up after a raucous Rocky crowd, but anyone who went last night for the first time totally missed the full RHPS experience, and we all know it's not just something to watch, but rather an event in which every spectator is also a part. What fun is it to raise a toast if nobody has actual pieces of toast to throw around, and how are we supposed to feel the rain of that fateful night without squirt guns (and newspapers just like Janet's under which to cower)? If I'm not picking rice out of my hair the day after the show, something is very wrong.

Still, I'm glad I went. It was a good time, and there was some quality yelling from all corners of the theatre. My friends and I had feared that the line was too long and we wouldn't get in. But I made it all the way to the ticket counter, handed over my cash, and when the guy had given me my ticket he slammed his hands authoritatively on the counter: "That's it! We're sold out!"

I felt like the biggest douchebag in the world, and with everyone behind me staring daggers through me, I slipped into the dark theater about 10 minutes after the show started. Because we were the last in, there were no seats together, and we each had to sit by random strangers. Partway through, I got the triumphant news that the Royals had signed Eric Hosmer. It was sad to not have anyone around with whom to share the happy news, but at a showing of Rocky Horror, one is never too likely to find many diehard baseball fans. There were three baseball fans there of whom I know, and they were all in my group, and one of them was me.

If you've never been, and if the picture at the top of the post doesn't scare you, I highly recommend going to experience RHPS. Every city has some cool, quirky theatre that shows it at least one weekend per year. The cool thing about my particular theatre is that my mother used to go see new movies there when she was in high school (which was approximately when Rocky Horror was a new release). So every time I go to a movie there, I feel like I'm sharing an experience with Mom, because not a whole lot has changed in the building.

And I might even go again tonight, because the Royals already have done their best to suck the very lifeblood out of me today. But I won't post about it again, because this post is as long as I can possibly stray from baseball.

As far back as the 1870s, American newspapers were referring to baseball as The National Pastime or The National Game. An award-winning account of the origins of the game is David Blocks Baseball Before We Knew It: A Search for the Roots of the Game (University of Nebraska Press, 2005). The publishers description of the book notes that David Block looks into the early history of the game and of the 150-year-old debate about its beginnings. He tackles one stubborn misconception after another, debunking the enduring belief that baseball descended from the English game of rounders and revealing a surprising new explanation for the most notorious myth of all—the Abner Doubleday–Cooperstown story. In short, the debate on the games origins may never be settled to everyones satisfaction.
Another early mention of the game can be found in an 1886 edition of Sporting Life magazine, in a letter from Dr. Matthew Harris of Boston, Massachusetts, formerly of St. Marys, Ontario, who details a base ball game played in Beachville, Ontario, on June 4, 1838 Militia Muster Day.
Professional baseball began in the United States around 1865, and the National League was founded in 1876 as the first true major league, quickly producing famous players such as Cap Anson. Several other major leagues formed and failed, but the American League, established in 1901 as a major league and originating from the minor Western League (1893), did succeed. While the two leagues were rivals who actively fought for the best players, often disregarding one anothers contracts and engaging in bitter legal disputes, a modicum of peace was established in 1903, and they began playing a World Series that year. The next year however, John McGraw, manager of the National League Champion New York Giants refused to participate in the World Series against the American League champion Boston Pilgrims, as McGraw refused to recognize the American League. The following year, McGraw relented and the Giants played the Philadelphia Athletics in the World Series.
Compared to modern times, games in the early part of the 20th century were lower scoring and pitchers were more successful. The inside game, whose nature was to scratch for runs, was played rather more violently and aggressively than it is today. Ty Cobb said of his era especially, Baseball is something like a war! This period, which has since become known as the dead-ball era, ended in the 1920s with several rule changes that gave advantages to hitters and the rise of the legendary baseball player Babe Ruth, who showed the world what power hitting could produce and thus changed the nature of the game.
During the first half of the 20th century, a s agreement in the form of the baseball color line effectively barred African-American players from the major leagues (though not Native Americans, oddly enough), resulting in the formation of several Negro Leagues. Finally in 1947, Major League Baseballs color barrier was broken when Jackie Robinson was signed by the National Leagues Brooklyn Dodgers. Although it was not instantaneous, baseball has since become fully integrated.
The middle of the century led major league baseball to the West of the United States and also became a time when pitchers dominated. Scoring became so low in the American League, due to pitching dominance, that the designated hitter was introduced; this rule now constitutes the primary difference between the two leagues.
Despite the popularity of baseball, and the attendant high salaries relative to those of average Americans, the players have become unsatisfied from time to time, as they believed the owners had too much control. Various job actions have occurred throughout the games history. Players on specific teams occasionally attempted strikes, but usually came back when their jobs were sufficiently threatened. The throwing of the 1919 World Series, the Black Sox scandal, was in some sense a or at least a rebellion by the ballplayers against a perceived stingy owner. But the strict rules of baseball contracts tended to keep the players in line in general.
This began to change in the 1960s when former United Steelworkers president Marvin Miller became the Baseball Players Union president. The union became much stronger than it had been previously, especially when the reserve clause was effectively nullified in the mid-1970s. A series of strikes and lockouts began in baseball, affecting portions of the 1972 and 1981 seasons and culminating in the infamous 1994 baseball strike that led to the cancellation of the World Series and carried over into 1995 before it was finally settled.
The players typically got what they demanded, but the popularity of baseball diminished greatly as a result of the players actions, and fans were slow to return. Cal Ripkens record-breaking 2131st consecutive game in 1995 was a feel-good moment that helped boost interest in the sport. The great home run race of 1998 between Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa really turned things around, captivating fans all summer. As with other times when adversity threatened the game, positive on-field events triggered a renewed surge in baseballs popularity in America.
Professional baseball leagues began to form in countries outside of America in the 1920s and 1930s, including the Netherlands (formed in 1922), Japan (1936), and Australia (1934). Today, Venezuela (1945), the whole of Europe (1953), Italy (1948), Korea (1982), Taiwan (1990), and mainland China (2003) all have professional leagues as well (however, the leagues in Australia], Italy and the United Kingdom have generally had a niche appeal compared to the leagues in Asia and Venezuela and only now is the sport beginning to broaden in scope in those nations, most notably in Australia, who won a surprise silver medal in the 2004 Olympic Games). Israel is trying to form a professional baseball league with the help of American emigres. Canada has a franchise in Major League Baseball as well. Competition between national teams, such as in the World Cup of Baseball and the Olympic baseball tournament, has been administered by the International Baseball Federation since its formation in 1938. As of 2004, this organization has 112 member countries. The new World Baseball Classic, first held in March 2006, seems likely to have a much higher profile than previous tournaments, owing to the participation for the first time of a significant number of players from the United States Major Leagues.
The 117th meeting of the International Olympic Committee, held in Singapore in July 2005, voted not to hold baseball and softball tournaments at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, but they will remain Olympic sports during the 2008 Summer Olympic Games and will be put to vote again for each succeeding Summer Olympics. The elimination of baseball and softball from the 2012 Olympic program enabled the IOC to consider adding two other sports to the program instead, but no other sport received a majority of votes favoring its inclusion. While baseballs lack of major appeal in a significant portion of the world was a factor, a more important factor was the unwillingness of Major League Baseball to have a break during the Games so that its players could participate, something that the National Hockey League now does during the Winter Olympic Games. Because of the seasonal nature of baseball and the high priority baseball fans place on the integrity of major-league statistics from one season to the next, however, it would be more difficult to accommodate such a break in MLB.

I can remember wax boxes being sold at the time being identified by which print run they were from for collectors to determine whether they were buying the error cards or the corrected versions as many collectors were looking for "Craig" Nettles boxes.

In spite of the errors, the 1981 set was a very nice debut. Its hard to believe Fleer took such a major step backwards the next year after a promising initial offering with the universally panned 1982 set which has perhaps the worst picture quality of any set ever released, but they finally got back on course with their 1983 set and really hit their stride in 1984.

Because of its significance as being the set that Fleer wanted to produce that ultimately broke the Topps monopoly on the baseball card market, this set will always be one of my favorites. I have very fond memories of the Spring and Summer of 1981 building this set along with the Topps and Donruss sets, and remember how exciting it was to be a card collector at the time.

With the expansion in the number of card producers and collecting options, the hobby was getting ready for a wild ride ahead. The excesses (parallels, inserts, set proliferation, 1 of 1's, etc) which came as card makers continually tried to one up each other have caused the hobby to change dramatically were still many years away.

If Fleer hadn't decided to take on Topps back in 1975, its hard to say how many more years would have gone by before another company would have tried to enter the market. Its also an interesting question to consider how differently the hobby may have grown and evolved had Fleer not challenged Topps when it did.

Its a shame that the company that helped set the stage for the incredible growth the hobby experienced by breaking down the main barrier to entry into the market is no longer around.

This is the same photographer from The Lusty Lady His wife brought it in and originally asked for something simple, but we suggested this rusted corrugated tin frame from LaVille Frames. It worked perfectly with this picture, that will hang in their guest bathroom. This is not just a picture frame. It really turned this into a piece of art. When you consider how long something like this will be displayed in your home, it's best to do it right the first time.
The Frame Studio mounted the piece, and instead of matting the image, Bela used spacers to keep a barrier between the picture and the conservation glass. Museum glass would of been a good upgrade here. Where we have it displayed you can see a lot of reflection. Hopefully there is less light in their guest bathroom.?.?..

Peaches cuddles up to American singer Har Mar Superstar at this week’s launch of Beck’s Canvas at London’s Royal College of Art.
Onlookers said the pair were getting on like a house on fire and messing around in front of the camera.
A source said: “They really seemed to hit it off. Peaches was knocking back the white wine and later on she took over the decks, leaving Har Mar to strut his moves around the bar.”
Just two days ago friend of party girl Peaches revealed that she has got engaged to her boyfriend Faris Badwan.
And now the party girl has been flaunting a ring on her engagement finger, presumably from The Horrors rocker.

Well Im a little late on the update. But thats ok I havent updated much anyway so its ok to be a little late. :)
We started out our holiday weekend by inviting my parents and brothers over for breakfast on the 4th. We enjoyed some fruit crepes and scrambled eggs. It was my first time making crepes for more than two people, so it took me a bit longer to make them than I thought it would.. But it was fun to visit while we were waiting, it was a fun morning!
Then we were off to Chases parents house for skirt steak tacos. This was about an hour after we finished breakfast so I was pretty full, but I still had to have atleast one. :)
Then we went to a friends house with his family for some fun games and more good food. There they had a marshmallow golfing contest, egg toss, water balloon toss and a water balloon fight! It was pretty fun, but after the water balloon games it started to get cold and wet so we decided to head home.
We (or I) had to stop by Starbucks and we decided to sit in the back of the truck to watch the Fireworks show down town. It was a fun day!
On Saturday after a few hours of talking him into it, I finally convinced Chase that we just had to go to Olympia to get a few things from Costco. Really, I just wanted to go to Olympia. We stopped by the mall and found that some dishes that Ive had my eye on were on sale! 50% off and then an additional 30% off of that! I couldnt pass this deal up since we were looking for things to spend the rest of our macys gift cards on anyway. But our macys was out of the larger plates so they called the Tacoma store to put them on hold for us. We left the mall and went straight to Tacoma to get the dishes. By the time were driving out of the mall parking lot I said Oh, I wonder what time Costco closes We both looked at the clock and it was 6:05. Chase called the nearest Costco and guess when they closed.. yep. 6:00. :) I still felt like we accomplished something to make it a well spent trip. Heres some pictures of my new pretty dishes.

How am I here? I can only shrug and say, s a God thing. Its the only possible explanation. Theres a reason my prayers werent answered during those dark, messed-up nights I spent scared out of my mind. Theres a reason I have this blessed and unexpected opportunity to play baseball and tell people my story
Every day Im reminded that my story is bigger than me. It never fails. Every time I go to the ballpark, I talk to people who are either battling addictions themselves or trying to help someone else who is A father will tell me about his son while Im signing autographs. A mother will wait outside the players parking lot to tell me about her daughter. They know where Ive been. They look to me because Im proof that hope is never lost.
They remind me that this isnt really about baseball Ive been called the biggest surprise in baseball this year, and I cant argue with that. If you think about it, how many people have gone from being a crack addict to succeeding at anything, especially something as demanding as major league baseball?
This may sound crazy, but I wouldnt change a thing about my path to the big leagues Youre probably thinking, Bad decisions and addiction almost cost him his life, and he wouldnt change anything? But if I hadnt gone through all the hard times, this whole story would be just about baseball. If Id made the big leagues at 21 and made my first All-Star team at 23 and done all the things expected of me, I would be a big-time baseball player, and thats it.
Baseball is third in my life right now, behind my relationship with God and my family. Without the first two, baseball isnt even in the picture. Believe me, I know.

I recently had the honor of watching Al Gore’s An Inconvienent Truth again (I watched it once last year in AP Bio). After thinking about it a while, I finally realized what was bothering me about the whole pro-environmental/global warming-is-here supporters. It wasn’t the issue,, it was mostly the attitude of the people. Watch that movie again and you’ll notice a lot of the people in the audience smiling and clapping furiously during Gore’s power point presentation. Obviously, these people are for protecting the environment and all that jazz, but how many of these people are actually doing something to help alleviate the cause they purport to believe in? How many of them are actually switching to hybrid cars, or better yet, selling their cars and using public transportation or even bikes instead? How many of them are recycling their waste products, using solar power, or conserving water and electricity? How many of them are actually doing something, anything, instead of just sitting there smiling and clapping smugly as if they’re on some kind moral high ground while the rest of us global warming ignoring fools wallow in ignorance? Of course, I don’t know any of these people personally, maybe they all live supremely environmentally-friendly lives. But I’m willing to bet that’s not true for all, if any of them.

And hell, how much is Al Gore doing to help the environment? I applaud him for bringing awareness to the whole global warming thing but is it really necessary to fly around in a private jet? Or own two energymansions? During the movie, I found myself asking whether or not I could take his message of not engaging in excess seriously when the man himself doesn’t seem to practice what he preaches. Honestly, if he’s really a champion of the environment, why not take a bus around? Shit, why notwalk? I guess all the Gore supporters could laugh that off as being unreasonable but he could at least get rid of the friggin private jet and take a commercial plane instead.

This rant is quickly becoming incoherent so I’ll cut it short. I’m not saying global warming is BS or that we shouldn’t protect the environment, that’s not the point. The point is how hypocritical many people are when it comes to this issue. Alot of people like to constantly preach to others about how to live an environmentally friendly life but it seems to me like quite a few of these people aren’t doing the same for themselves. And I'mnot saying you'reonly a non-hypocrite if youlive in a grass hut, I'm saying that there's alwaysmore you can do if you really care about the issue.I takepublic busesand BART every summer to go to A's games and it's almost always nearly empty, weekdays and weekends. SoI dunno, maybe some of you can skip the car and take the bus instead when you go to work? You could be a self righteous, tree-hugging liberal and you could preach all you want to an evil, polar bear-killing conservative but it doesn’t do shit if you drive around in a SUV.

There’s a lot of people who say they believe in global warming. If half of these people start doing what it takes to solve this problem, then we’ll be well on our way to actually solving the problem.

I was gonna put upmy New Years Resolutions but I couldn't come up with anything other than "Stop making Clark is a Jedi jokes" and "Reward myself with more sandwiches." Oh well, I'm pretty sure I can keep my resolutions. Can YOU? O_O

Juno is a ridiculously good movie. Go see it.

Today we got a surprise from the UPS guy! Well, I knew about it, but Jonathan didnt. Shane had ordered a fishing pole so that he could take him fishing on our camping trip in a couple weeks.
Jonathan sent a message to Shane asking if he could open it up before he got home. He was so excited when I told him it was his!
We took it outside and I took a few pictures of him on the deck. Not much fish in the dirt and weeds though.

So 3 years ago, my beloved Minolta X-700 35 mm Camera was becoming harder to use. It had accidentally fallen of the counter in the kitchen 10 years ago. It was sitting on the counter and the strap got caught in the drawer when DS opened it. Something broke inside the lens, but it was still usable. AS the years went on it became more and more difficult and when I took it to a camera shop a couple of years ago, to have it looked at and maybe get a new lens. I was told that I would be better off saving for a new digital SLR, as they are not making parts for the 35mm, or parts will be very difficult to come by. We have had some other digitals point and shoots. But I never liked the picture quality from them or the delay and would still use my 35mm for pictures. I should also add that I bought that 35mm when I was 20 and stationed in Alaska with the Coast Guard. So this camera is around 24 years old. Then my friend received a Nikon D70 DSLR, and I loved it, she let me play with it..and it was an awesome camera. I then knew at that time that if I was ever to replace the 35mm, so a few years ago for Mother's Day, the family gave me a gift certificate..to get a DSLR camera, well I never really took the leap, most in part due to finances at the time, we were paying out of pocket for Kodie's Therapy sessions and Norm had just retired from the military and was starting a new job. My old 35mm lens had finally given up. What ever had come loose all those years ago, had now managed to prevent the lens from moving but about 1/8th of an inch..so I could not longer zoom or focus it. With a very special trip coming up in September with my mom, a cruise to Alaska. I knew by then I needed something more then a point and shoot, even the Canon we bought last summer for the older kids to use for a photography class, wasn't what I hoped it would be. Yes I will admit...I got hooked on SLR cameras all those years ago. I guess you could say that photography is a serious hobby for me. I love capturing time. I think this is in part because my dad loves to take pictures. I wish I had his old camera, just to have it. But I also am learning that I need to step in front of the camera, as I looked through old family pictures and realized I only have a handful of pictures of my dad. So I will get better at that..I hope.

So this past week I was in Costco and the Nikon D60 that was released this year, was sitting there. It was a kit that came with a case and two lenses and DVD's. It also had an instant rebate. We still had our tax refund sitting in savings acct so I called DH on the phone and he said to go ahead and get it. So I have finally redeemed that gift certificate.
