See parts one, two, and three for more info. In short, a look at Young Guns from the Upper Deck flagship hockey release and whether they were truly worthy of Young Gun status.
Format remains card number, player, 07/08 team (if any), and if the player ever appeared on an Upper Deck series 1 or 2 release again. Information culled from the Internet Hockey Database. Part four covers the series 2 release from 01/02. Here you go:
412 Timo Parssinen - 27 points in 34 games for Timra IK (Sweeden).  Timo won numerous awards for his 2004 campaign in the Finnish elite league, so its clear he had potential, however he only put up 3 points for the Ducks in 17 games in the NHL.  No Upper Deck releases followed.
413 Ilya Bryzgalov -  Played 55 games for the Phoenix Coyotes, sporting a .921 sv % and a 2.42 GAA.  Often overshadowed by JS Giguere in Anaheim, Bryzgalov was quite the waiver claim for the Coyotes last year.  Featured on cards since 05/06.
414 Kevin Sawyer -  Retired from hockey.  Sawyer was an enforcer and even made one of my fantasy hockey rosters one year when I was starved for PIMs.  Sawyer ended up with 403 PIMs and 3 goals in 100 career games in the NHL.  He did not appear in any future sets.
415 Kamil Piros - Played for the Cologne Sharks (German).  Reappeared on a 03/04 Upper Deck cards after he scored 5 points in 3 games during the 02/03 season, but ended his NHL career with 8 points in 24 games.
416 Ivan Huml - Skated for Mora IK (Sweeden).  Ivan left for Europe during the lockout and never returned.  Appeared in no future sets.
417 Scott Nichol - 73 games for the Nashville Predators, scoring 18 points and 72 PIMs.  has had a solid career, but no Upper Deck cards.
418 Jukka Hentunen - 28 pts in 34 games for Kazan Ak-Bars (Russia).  No cards since.
419 Erik Cole - Tough scoring winger for the Carolina Hurricanes.  Certainly qualifies as a Young Gun.  Cards ever since.
420 Ben Simon - Played for the Springfield Falcons (AHL).  Bens played mostly in the AHL, but has played 81 games over the course of four years, scoring 3 goals and 47 PIMs.  No cards.
421 Niko Kapanen - Played 79 games for the Phoenix Coyotes, scoring 28 points.  Featured since the 03/04 release.
422 Pavel Datsyuk - All star center for the Detroit Red Wings, last year with 97 points.  Also the winner of the Lady Byng trophy two years running.  Certainly qualifies as a Young Gun, with cards ever since.
423 Ty Conklin - Played 33 games for the Penguins, putting up a .923 sv %.  Conklin spent most of his time with the Oilers, and has appeared in the last two outdoor classics.  Cards from 03/04 to 05/06.
425 Niklas Hagman - Scored a career best 27 goals for the Dallas Stars in 82 games.  Hagman is part of the first Finnish father son tandem to play in the NHL (his father last played in 1992).  One Upper Deck card in the 05/06 release.
426 Kristian Huselius - A scoring LW for the Calgary Flames, putting up 66 points in 81 games.  Appeared in all releases except for 05/06.
427 Jaroslav Bednar - 36 points, 61 PIMs in 40 games for Slavia Praha HC (Czech).  Had some minor success in the NHL, but chose to stay overseas after the lockout.  No other Upper Deck releases.
428 Nick Schultz - 81 games for the Minnesota Wild, 15 points and 42 PIMs.  Nick is defensive defenseman with cards in 05/06 and 06/07.
429 Travis Roche - Played for the San Antonio Rampage, scoring 41 points in 71 games.  No cards since.
430 Martin Erat - Has emerged as a scorer, posting 57 points in 76 games for the Nashville Predators.  Was skipped only for the 03/04 release.
431 Andreas Salomonsson - Played for Modo Hockey Ornskoldsvik (Sweeden).  No other Upper Deck cards.
432 Josef Boumedienne - Scored 42 points in 52 games for the Hershey Bears of the AHL.  Played parts of 3 seasons in the NHL before leaving to play in Europe, then reappeared stateside last year.  No cards since.
433 Scott Clemmensen - 3 games for the Maple Leafs, 40 games for the Marlies of the AHL.  28 total games over 5 NHL seasons.  Worthy of a card in 05/06.
434 Dan Blackburn - Retired from hockey due to a shoulder injury.  Blackburn was the #10 pick overall in the 2001 draft, and appeared in 63 games over 2 seasons, mostly as a teenager.  Appeared on the 02/03 release as well.
435 Radek Martinek - Still playing defense for the New York Islanders, appearing in 69 games and registering 15 assists.  Has not appeared on another Upper Deck card since.
436 Raffi Torres - Appeared in only 32 games for the Edmonton Oilers, registering 11 points before being sidelined with a knee injury.  Torres was a #5 pick in the 2000 draft.   Hes been in the Upper Deck set since 03/04.
437 Ivan Ciernik - 66 points in 56 games for the Cologne Sharks (German).  Played 89 games over 3 years for the Capitals before playing in Europe.  No cards.
438 Jiri Dopita - Played 42 games for Znojemsti Excalibur Orli.  Played well for the Flyers initially, then disappointed after a trade to the Oilers.  Returned to Europe without another Upper Deck appearance.
439 Mark Rycroft - Played 34 games for the Syracuse Crunch (AHL).  Rycroft has stuck around for 226 NHL games over 4 seasons, and appeared in the 05/06 and 06/07 releases.
440 Ryan Tobler - 20 points in 21 games for the Colorado Eagles of the CHL.  Played 4 games with the Lightning and apparently got in a fight, logging 5 PIMs.  No other cards.
441 Chris Corrinet - Retired from hockey.  Chris played in a total of 8 games for the Washington Capitals, picking up an assist and 6 PIMs.  No other cards.
29 more Young Guns, for a total of 144.

US men get a French Open win

PARIS -- One of the wonderful things about tennis is that, unlike baseball and, to a lesser degree, football, the sport is not obsessed with statistics.
No one keeps track, for example, of how times a lefthander from South America commits a double-fault, on clay, at night, in the second set, against a right-handed opponent ranked in the top 20.
The statistics kept by the various tennis organizations (ATP, WTA, ITF) are relatively few and to the point. Like aces. People want to know how many aces players hit.
And last Wednesday, in a five-set match here, the 6-foot-10 Croatian Ivo Karlovic, who leads the ATP in aces, smacked a French Open record 39 of them. Or was it 35, which would not be a record?
For a couple of days, no one was certain how many he had hit because while FDE, the Paris company hired by the French Tennis Federation to keep statistics at the matches, gave Karlovic 39, the chair umpire, Louise Engzell of Sweden, recorded only 35 on her scorecard.
If FDE had given Karlovic 31 aces and Engzell had credited him with 27, no one would much care, despite the embarrassing discrepancy, and I wouldn't be wasting my time writing about this and you wouldn't be wasting your time reading it.
But there was a significant issue involved. Did Karlovic or did Karlovic not surpass Andy Roddick's French Open record of 37 aces, struck in 2001 against Michael Chang?
When it was pointed out to the tournament that their hired stat keepers were four aces off the chair umpire's scorecard, they initiated an investigation, of sorts, and came to the same conclusion I did -- that Engzell has a lot more credibility than some person that might have been hired off the street to keep stats.
So, no record, even though the tournament still hasn't made the correction on its website. If you look up Karlovic's stats for that match, he continues to be listed with a record 39 aces, not 35.
But that's not the end of this story, because if someone is so incompetent as to be four aces off, how many other statistics kept at the French Open are inaccurate?
This isn't some Class Z tournament. This is a Grand Slam. Run it like a Grand Slam.
To get some answers, I tried to contact the person in charge of assigning volunteers to keep stats at the various matches in order to ask the following questions:
1. Who are these people and what makes them qualified to record official statistics at a Grand Slam?
2. How could anyone possibly be off by four aces?
3. If they can't get aces right, how many other statistics now in the tournament record book are wrong and how can players, reporters and coaches, who routinely depend on these statistics, trust what these official statistics report?
I spoke with a liaison to the FFT, asking her to set up an interview with Monsieur Jean Noel, who, I was told, supervises the stat volunteers. Come back in 10 minutes, she said.
I did, and she looked quite nervous when I reappeared. No one wants to talk about this, she said. I asked if that was Noel she had spoken with and she said, no, it was an executive with the FFT. That person had told her not to put reporters in touch with anyone who could comment on the Karlovic mess.
However, I did speak with someone who works for IBM, which does statistics at the three other Slams and which runs the radar guns here that gauge service speed. IBM has nothing to do with stats at the French Open.
They have their own way of doing things here, said the IBM guy.
I can only conclude that the French Federation doesn't want to talk to reporters about the incompetency of their statisticians because they're pretty embarrassed by this screw-up and because, possibly, they already sense there could be statistical inaccuracies elsewhere.
In all fairness, it wouldn't be unusual to have a discrepancy of one ace between the chair umpire and the court statistician. The umpire, from a perch above the court, might see a serve glance off the tip of the racket and thus not give an ace while a statistician might not see the glance.
But a difference of four aces?
Someone isn't doing the job here. Maybe, as the IBM guy suggested, these people hired by FDE think any serve that glances off a racket is an ace.
If you go to the French Open website (rolandgarros.com) to look up statistics on a match, be forewarned. What you're reading may have no relationship to what actually happened on court.
The FFT sets a pretty plate here with its elegant on-site restaurants and mezzanine boxes on the Philippe Chatrier stadium court for the rich and famous. They pay some artist thousands just to create a logo for each tournament.
So why can't they pay attention to something as fundamental as how many aces a player hits in a match.

So my deep run in the 6-max tourney was simpleget strong hands and get paid off. I started off with pocket kings early and took down a pot with a continuation bet. That changed a little later when I folded to a push on the river with this board, Ah Ad Jd 3c As. I floated a bet when he fired out post flop and I re-raised on the turn with air. I was folding any river bet and got knocked down to 2800 chips. I won a big hand with 67 suited on a flop of 876. I called flop and turn bets and I re-raised on the river to take it down uncontested. I finally doubled up against the table maniac when I saw a flop from the sb with J9 suited. The flop was 9TJ and Mr. Maniac bet with two of us calling. I was a little worried about a slow played straight from the other guy but I wanted to see what his action would be. The turn gives me the flush draw and two pair so I come over the top of his 1200 bet and he calls showing AJ. The river gives me the flush and I move to 7200. I end the first hour with 6900 chips.

For the early part of the 2nd hour I lost ground and ended up hovering around 5K in chips. I finally had a chance to double again against the same maniac when I hit a set on the flop and filled up the river. Other dude hit his set and paid me off. He check-raised me with top pair of 9s and now Im sitting at 12K. I stayed quiet for a while before taking down a hand with KK. The very next hand I get AA and double up to 22K. Three hands later I get KK again and bust who had QQ and move to 30K. This game is so easyright? I give half of it back when I hit TPTK with my AK and loose to a set of kings. I get my chips back when I bust a guys aces with KQ when I hit two pair and end the 2nd hour at 32K.

The 3rd hour saw me check raise a flop with an over pair to move to 42K. After getting knocked down to 35K and some missed flops, I won a big hand on a check-raise and a continuation bet. The I find AA again and double up right before a table change. Sitting at 88K and top of the tourney, Im ready to use my stack. I was in a hand I made players play for their stacks. I won a few and lost with QQ vs. 67. I then lost a race with TT vs. AQ. I then lose a big hand when my opponent goes runner runner for a flush after I had hit my straight. So all the luckbox poker I had earlier was coming back but I still had 52K chips in my stack. I then get the suck out of the tourney. I get all-in vs. the same donk with AK suited. He has KK and end end up with the wheel on the river to move to 113K.

At some point we get into the 4th hour and Im sitting great at 127K. I bust a short stack with my 25 vs. AK and hit 134K just before the slide. I turn it around with a boat and get back to 125K and eventually get to 140K with some steals.

At the final table I went card dead. And in 6-max with a M of 13 or so I was in trouble. I played back a few times and regained my stack but was hurting with 4 players left. I had 3rd place equity but wanted a double up to have a shot. I eventually ran into this hand:

Full Tilt Poker Game #6461064522: $3 + $0.30 Tournament (49009537), Table 51 - 4000/8000 Ante 1000 - No Limit Hold'em - 1:54:20 ET - 2008/05/18

Ok we will take up where we left off. We are considering the plays on and off the number 3 in pro football.

Rule #1 These must be opening numbers to be effective.

Rule #2 They must remain static for days, preferably until game day. The same idea works with 3, 7, and 10. Here is a simple chart.

Opening numbers are:

Consider the dog 2.5........3........3.5 Consider the favorite

Consider the dog 6.5........7........7.5 Consider the favorite

Consider the dog 9.5.......10.......10.5 Consider the favorite

We are looking for games that open at 2.5, 3, 3.5...etc. How many times have you laid that -2.5 with the favorite and lost? You might be surprised how many of those dogs +2.5 win the game outright. You might be surprised how many of those favorites at -3.5 win and cover the spread.

During my years in Vegas I talked to lots of wise guys. Guys who I respected and who knew how to play the game. I learned to not fear +2.5, +6.5, +9.5 dogs. I learned not to fear -3.5, -7.5, and -10.5 favorites. I started to think what is up is down and what is down is up! My world was turned upside down! I was taught to always take that extra 1/2 point value on the dog. I am a dog bettor. I love dogs. But I was afraid of dogs on the short end of that 1/2 point. Life is different now.

Remember: The book wants you to bet a certain way so they can balance their books.

Remember: The book wins money when the dogs win and cover because the public loves favorites.

Remember: The book will try to get more money on the dog if their opinion is that the favorite may win and cover.

We don't blindly lay the extra 1/2 point. We don't blindly forgo the 1/2 point either. We need to consider the whole picture. We first must consider the bookmaker. Why is he opening Green Bay -2.5 vs Chicago? Why does he want money on Green Bay? Can Chicago cover or win in this spot?

Maybe Chicago has beaten Green Bay the last 4 meetings and this game is being played in Green Bay. You feel that the number should be 3, but this game opened at -2.5 and has not moved for three days. I would wait until game day and if this number stays at -2.5 I would take Chicago +2.5...if it moves on game day to 3, that means the public is betting Green Bay and I would also take Chicago and feel I am in good position going against the public.

To me the opening number of Green Bay -2.5 meant that the books opinion is that Chicago may win this game. They figure the public will be betting on Green Bay at home as a short favorite. The public is loving Green Bay at -2.5 at home. Chicago is also a public team and Chicago bettors will take the Bears at +2.5. So I have to think why not open this game at -3 ? These are division opponents who know each other well. An opening number of 3 seems like the number but they opened it at Green Bay -2.5. It is a cat and mouse game. Which way are you going to bet?

Bookmakers are not supposed to be gamblers. They are supposed to post numbers that split the action equally on each side. They are supposed to make a theoretical 4.5% on each game. Guess what? Sometimes bookies like to gamble. So is it possible that the book feels more money will come in on Green Bay -2.5 than on Chicago +2.5....... and if Chicago wins they will make more than 4.5% on this game. Maybe. They may just feel the Bears may win but will get plenty of action at +2.5. If they are gambling that more money will come in on Green Bay -2.5 than on Chicago at +2.5 ....I want to be on Chicago.

I'm gonna take a shot on Chicago +2.5 and see if I get the money. If this game opened at Green Bay -3.5 I would strongly consider taking Green Bay -3.5 since they are at home. At -3.5 this game would take on a whole new scenario to think about. If I decided to bet Green Bay at -3.5 in this scenario I would wait until game day hoping the number goes down to 3 and then bet. Green Bay at -3.5 would indicate to me the book wants money on the dog. Green Bay might be the the play in that case.

It is a cat and mouse game between the book, the public, and you. I am approaching this as the thinking man on the street. Always question what the number means before you bet. Ask why the game opened at this number.

Remember: The game must OPEN on the key number of 2.5...3...3.5.

The number should remain static for days...preferably til game day. No play otherwise.

If the numbers look too easy beware. We'll discuss more in Part 3.

. One cool thing is that, if I am correct in setting it so that anyone can edit it, you can put your area's courses and stores in, then edit the code you get to embed a map like this one so that it shows your area when it is initially opened, instead of half the world, which is what it is set for now. So you can publish a local map but it can be part of an everything map. The code should work in the text box on your own page, on a club home page, or on a tournament event page. And it works all around the world.
